Just a complaint

Sometimes I hate having chickens. It always seems to be the favorites that pass first. We had a bad rain storm here today. A 5yr old Belgian de'Anvers hen got caught out with no shelter and drowned. My girls are devastated.Post edited by bluchrystals at 2020-07-17 19:07:44

Sorry to hear Blu :((
I can completely agree that the favorites don't last as long as we want them to.. I tried so hard to keep polish last year but I couldn't keep them alive.. I stopped trying to play favorites and *knock on wood* I haven't had any mishaps lately (although I secretly have favorites but they don't know it.. one is an all white Easter Egger and the other is a old English game bantam who's Queen "Bee" of the coop).. I hope your girls are okay :( -
I worked at a boarding barn years ago that had a bunch of chickens. Plus, the neighbor chickens would come over, too. I hated every last one of them... except one.
I liked the little Silky rooster. He was the most pathetic rooster ever, but he thought he was hot spit. Not mean, though. He was just social enough to kind of hang out with me but just wild enough to stay out of the way. He was perfect.
Another neighbor let their dog run loose and the mongrel killed my chicken. :( -
I'm a crazy chicken lady
-
I wrote heaps and tried post it and all it posted of it was I'm a crazy chicken lady
-
They're better today, thankfully. We have more chicks coming soon in the mail so hopefully that will take a little of the edge off this.
-
A fox got into my chicken yard last week and killed 3 of my hens, 2 of which were my favorites.
15 chickens came with the house we bought last spring; I have 8 left. I'll likely pick up more chicks this fall when one of my Buff Orpingtons goes broody. -
Chicks in the mail! :-O
Are they in an envelope? Does the postman (or postlady) try and squeeze them through the letterbox or do they ring the doorbell and make you sign for them? OK - that's all tongue in cheek but I can't imagine how this works. If you could explain I'd love to know. -
@White Valley, I believe that the chicks are in a box with holes in it so that they can breathe, and the delivery person does bring it up to the door.•My Now Projects•

The box makes sense, but is it really through the mail? Sometimes mail gets held up and can take days to arrive. Would it be a specialist delivery company that handles live animals?
Can you tell that I have a questioning nature? Or am I just nosy?
;)) -
USPS has been shipping live animals for ages They know how to handle it. Chicks are shipped overnight always and incidents are incredibly rare.Post edited by Ammit at 2020-06-12 06:14:05Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

I seem to remember my dad going to town to pick them up from the post office at the crack of dawn. They're shipped pretty much immediately after hatching when they've yet to start eating or drinking, so as soon as you get them you teach them how to drink water. And then you do chores and get ready for school :))
Herps (snakes, lizards, frogs) are also frequently mailed. And invertebrates! I got my compost worms in the mail. Some of those it's... better, lol, to do in summer. At least here in Minnesota...Spiderweb Stables

I've bought betta fish through the mail before too. I'm about to buy some aquarium snails that way too.
-
Theyr'e shipped within hours of hatching, overnight, and normally waiting in the post office the next morning. A chick has enough leftover yolk to survive three days, but it doesn't normally take anywhere close to that to receive them. The worst thing that normally happens is they'll be slightly stressed from the temperature fluctuations during shipping.Post edited by bluchrystals at 2020-06-13 04:20:34

Thanks for all the info. That's fascinating. Told you I was nosy!
-
I received my Betta fish in the mail. He came via priority mail and took 3 days. He has a warming pack (it was March) and he was fine and acclimated to his new tank wonderfully.
-
@Visions where did you get your Betta from? I use to breed Betta about 8 years ago and I just imported 3 within the last month from Thailand to show my husband and my daughters what it was like to import a fish from another country!
They shipped on a Saturday there and they got to the transhipper by Wednesday and we got them by ThursdayPost edited by LEAcres at 2020-06-15 10:16:05 -
am interested also ; I lost my last Betta male in march and don't like buying them from Petco -.-
-
@annismyrph check out aquabid! There's a bunch of breeders in the states and international that posts their fish on there and they are beautiful!
-
@bambi207 How has your experience been with the whole transhipper process? I've been wanting to order one from this guy who breeds wild types and wild hybrids, but the whole process makes me a bit nervous.
-
@runaround66 it's been great! I use Edy Tamtama in new jersey and he typically gets back to me the same day if I have a question!
I bought from AKE Betta in Thailand and it was hit or miss... My husband's fish was the right one but mine wasn't plus he has a lump on his fin which makes him not want to use it while swimming (we think it's getting bigger) but AKE was very nice and sent a new boy of my choice at their expense so I honestly can't fully knock them for the mix up.. -
@bambi207 Good to know. The only one I ever ordered I got from Florida, and apparently I didn't see he was doing buy one get one free, so I had a surprise extra betta when I got them. Luckily the tank I had planned was big enough to divide at the last minute, lol. I'm looking at Frank's Bettas overseas when he gets more stock on sale, or there's a guy out of Houston I'm looking at too since that's only a few hours away.
-
So my new chicks were shipped yesterday, tracking is showing them not checked in at the airport yet...and they're expected delivery date is Monday! Here's hoping I have live chicks when they do finally show up.
-
Can't until they don't show. I'm hoping it updates after nightfall.
-
ew just ew ; a box full of dead chicks has to be one of the worst things to open ><<br />

Coastgemusa.com is where I did get my betta. He is thriving as my office companion! My apologies for not seeing this thread again.
-
@Visions you got lucky with your Betta.. a lot of people on FB fish forums have had nothing but bad luck with Coast Gem USA.. they are down to a 2.3 rating on FB from a 3 back in may..
-
OH WOW - I never saw them on FB, just found them through a google search. I guess I am very lucky then.
