Owning a Horse Seems to be Nightmare
  • On the first of June, I adopted my first horse. He is an ex-racehorse who has been off the track for a couple years, and I have been working with him since he came off the track. When I brought him to his new home, he got hurt very quickly (requiring 18 stitches). After being on stall rest for a week and half, he started to get aggressive and now has been given 30 days to move off the property. He is not a aggressive horse like this but he is in pain and stressed from being in a new place and being injured.
    This is just heartbreaking.
Now I find out, after posting in a OTTB facebook page (and clearly stating in my post that I have nothing against the facility) that apparently we were inconveniencing everyone. I was told that someone missed their riding lesson because Roy was getting stitches. And that medication administration and assistance with rebandaging "is not covered in the board" and that those who have been very helpful were not happy with the situation at all and didnt want to help. I just don't know what to do. This facility was our first and only choice for boarding Roy and now I have no idea where to take him.
  • Am not Sure where you are ; but there are places that work specifically with OTTB horses ; as they have special needs for the first few months to a year ; contact your local 4-h ( believe it or not ) or if you have a FFA chapter near you ; they may be able to help

  • He's been off the track for a couple years. And the barn he is currently at has probably 15 or more OTTBs.
  • So do you not have any other boarding options around you? And if they were going to get upset and say that wound care and medication weren't included in board, they should have said that up front when the horse was injured. That was on them.

I'd say if there's other options, move and don't look back. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right place.
  • id check your board agreement on the meds etc ; I agree with runaround66 , if its not in there they made a mistake and its not your fault . and yes I too would try to find another place ; even check to see if there are any " personal" homes with barns ; sometimes a neighborhood type place is better

  • For context, it is almost unheard of for meds and bandaging to be part of board. That is always something you will expect to pay more for.

I am so sorry it is turning out so poorly.

  • Ammit is right. Meds, rebandaging, even extra stall time (depending on the barn) is something that you have to pay extra for. But it sounds like there are some less than nice people at this barn so maybe, despite the stress, moving will end up being a good thing. It is an awful thing when the barn your horse is at is not your happy place.

I love Warmbloods with lots of Sooty and DP. Dark Mahogany Bays, Liver Chestnuts, and Blacks make me super happy. I love horses with color, dfp1, nd1, gray, GP, and KP on the dark base. One day I would like to have a herd of high pt, well papered dark beauties. ID# 257941

  • Barn culture is a big part of the reason I got out of horses. So much drama at so many barns. I found other social hobbies a better fit for me sadly.

  • I was told before he got injured that any meds/supplements would be given if supplied by the owner. The person who’d been helping me rebandage did it herself instead of letting me do it (I’ve always been there and willing to do it).

I am looking into other different boarding options in the area, but it is proving difficult due to pricing and availability.
  • And I am paying more for his stall to be cleaned, for him to get water and hay each day.
  • is this a full board facility or rough ?
if its full board I ve never heard of a barn charging MORE to feed and water a horse

  • If you have Facebook, find your local farmers co-op page (ex mine is western Maryland farmers exchange)
Make a post looking for a barn or a field for rent that's within your price range..

Boarding is so stressful and honestly took the fun out of horses for me... The last boarding facility I was at jacked the board up so high that I had to work 3 jobs and sleep in my truck between jobs in order to pay their prices.. I never got to see my boy because of this and the owner of the barn would meet me at my jobs to pay him and I put trust in them that he was taking care of him when the opposite was actually happening... He was so skinny and I felt like I had failed him by the time I was able to pull him and take him to a friend's field that had just become vacant.. now he's on my own property of 5 acres and almost back to his old grumpy fat self! But if it wasn't for the generosity of someone lending me their field until we closed on our house, I don't know what I would have done
  • I found a new place for him that is relatively affordable but I have to provide grain and find people to help feed him each day if I cannot go out. I think that boarding is going to be extremely stressful for me so I hope that in the near future I can find my own place to keep him and not have to worry about those things. Luckily, the new place he is going to is right down the road from where he is now and the owner offered to trailer him there since I dont have a trailer. I hope this place is better than the first place.
  • if that farm is any where near a high school ; am sure there is a horse crazy girl who would be willing to go after school each day to feed him possibly in return for a lesson a week riding him ?

  • Or ask around to others at your new barn. I used to switch off with someone because I couldn't make it out in the morning and she couldn't make it out at night. She would feed my guys in they morning and let them out, I would bring her guys in at night and feed them.
