Would like some advice and opinions about breeding a horse.
-
I really really like this horse. May I ask, in your opinion if he was yours, what would you choose to breed him to, in order to get one that looks like him? I'm thinking of putting him in a pasture, so more than one answer would be great.

Breed him to a Chestnut Tobiano mare, one without frame so you don't risk lethal white and probably best she doesn't have W20 either.
If you wanted a darker foal try a mare with DP and/or Sooty, and so long as the mare is ee it doesn't matter what her agouti (A) gene is as it won't show without EPost edited by DarkFrost at 2020-06-23 11:41:10HJ1: 266615

Any mare that is e/e (not bay) would work to get a chestnut!
I wouldn't breed him to any frame (O) horses either, and probably none with W20 like DarkFrost said because it can be lethal. His white factor is minimal, if you want more white breed to a mare with more white factor or less white try a mare with no white factor :)
The fun thing about pasture is that you can stuff a whole lot of mares in one pasture and see the outcome and decide what you like best!Post edited by kgstable at 2020-06-23 11:49:07Licenses: Watercolor, Nacre, Splash M, Wrong Warp, Phantom Autumn/Lace/Diamond Sparkle/Web/Hearts/Shamrock/Muddy Puddles/Roses/Critter Tracks/Jellyfish/Birdtracks, Paintbrush Cool, Paintbrush Prism, Plaid, Shatterglass, Inkspot, Toner, Mushroom, DFP2, Onyx, Platinum, Ice 6, Ice 17Thanked by 1OopsDotCom -
White factor is a pain as it's not a simple calculation. I keep the white factor low on my foundies but they occasionally drop Extensive WF foals.Post edited by DarkFrost at 2020-06-23 11:49:56HJ1: 266615

I agree, I don't like high White factor either, I do try to keep it low in hopes that lowers my chances to get a high white factor foal. Seems to work okay so far for me, but like you said occasionally I'll get a high/extensive WF foalLicenses: Watercolor, Nacre, Splash M, Wrong Warp, Phantom Autumn/Lace/Diamond Sparkle/Web/Hearts/Shamrock/Muddy Puddles/Roses/Critter Tracks/Jellyfish/Birdtracks, Paintbrush Cool, Paintbrush Prism, Plaid, Shatterglass, Inkspot, Toner, Mushroom, DFP2, Onyx, Platinum, Ice 6, Ice 17Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

id do like 20-30 mares with a variety of white factors ; see which ones you like best and then find more mares that look like the ones you like ; keep the girls and breed them back to him ( its bootstrapping but it will solidify your look quicker )Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

You probably want to avoid mares with any of the kit white or sabino genes in addition to mares with frame. W2 has at least some chance of a lethal foal when combined with any kit mutations except tobiano and roan. W20 is actually one of the safer kit genes to combine with it, W2/W20 is generally only lethal with extensive white factor although the frame ups the amount of white and therefore increases the risk.
Here is the link to the post Ammit made when she first changed the kit lethality from certain combinations being 100% lethal to the current system.

Thank you so very much. It's especially helpful when several people participate in the discussion. Each of you puts it in a slightly different way, and together it's a lot more informative than just one person. I appreciate that.
Only problem with my guy, the silly thing gives foals with a lower pt that his own. but some of his foals so far have been adorable (at least to me) and far too many of them get snipped. I want to keep trying, I'm going to have to do a genetics test on a fair number of mares I suspect. I'd rather not have to use gmts, they're too expensive. until my show horses start paying for things.
I'm having much more fun in the game this time around. It's more challenging and I like learning.
