Breeding by generation and not paper level?
-
ok so im wondering, I know no one would buy them and im not particularly looking to sell from this account. What are the pros and cons?
-
well you kinda do both ; but since you are looking to " improve" your herd you take the best colt of 2nd gen and breed him to the best fillies ; if you breed a *Star paper stallion to Yellow paper mares ; you ll get a lot of pretty show ponies ; but very very few would pass breeding inspection

I breed by generation first, but they arent always equal papered. An example...
I only keep A- Papered 2nd gen colts. I only need a few colts to cover lots of mares, so only the best stay intact. However, my 2nd gen mares consist of Blue and Red Papered superior mares, and occasionally an AGA because she has the genetics I want. I keep all my breeding mares in pasture to get the best foals I can.

I do both generation and paper, but it depends on generation. That being said, I do have criteria for each generation.
Foundations: C/Yellow and B/Red that pass SBA.
2nd gen: B/Red min, I also get some As and blues, but all must test superior to their parents and pass SBA.
3rd gen: All must be A/Blue and test superior to their parents and pass SBA
4th gen: A/Blue min, I also get some Stars/Golds, but all must test superior to their parents and pass SBA
5th gen and later: Star/Gold and all must pass SBA and test superior to their parents

I find breeding by generations the easiest way to gauge whether or not your herds quality is improving. It’s also easiest to see whether you are matching horses with similar quality together for better odds of intact offspring.
Personally I’d never by uneven generation horses for my breeding program. I’m not as picky about paper levels being mismatched (probably really wouldn’t find what I breed for if I did require paper levels to be the same) I do require that the paper levels move up over the pedigree with no more than 3 generations being superior but the same paper levels.Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genesThanked by 1InTheStars1992 -
Thank you guys! I've just realized that once I hit g3 most of the paper levels are not advancing. I generally only keep red papered from c/yellow crosses however I very rarely get a/blue from red/b crosses. Its getting super frustrating. I cant SBA on this account but I dont want to het stressed by paper level when I made this account for fun!

are you leaving your mares in pasture? they get a big bonus if you can leave them there to live :)Thanked by 1InTheStars1992

If you can't use SBA and don't want to pay for comparison testing, you can breed mares a couple of times and determine (approximately) how good they are as breeders by using AFPT, which is how most of us did it for a LONG time (and then were sort of surprised when comparison testing hit and...oops...)
I only breed even generations. Foundations to foundations, 2nd gen to 2nd gen, etc, and from my experience, once you get to As and Blues you get two (and sometimes three!) solid generations where you have the same paper level but the foal is superior to the dam/sire. And then you get to *Star/Gold and you can absolutely have one of those be significantly better than the next.
It's one of the challenging elements of the game. :)Thanked by 1InTheStars1992 -
Thank you guys! Yes I do leave my mares in pastures, and for my B/Red base I use exceptionally perfect, exceptional producers, or b/red rank specials! Right now im keeping superior stallions, i do not have the funds to test every mare though unfortunately!
-
Test the studs first ; I ve been told the studs improve faster than the mares anyway ; so if you keep breeding SUP studs your herd will improve slowly with each season ; if you are starting with B / Red and breed to A next season in theory ; in 2 seasons you should have some gold* so start testing the mares then and cull the boys HARD every month ; use them for showponies and build up your daily bonus to help you do the testing

Thank you guys!

Definitely cull the 2nd gen "B" papered colts hard.
My horses did the same thing, I could not get A/Blue 3rd gens out of B x Red crosses for anything.
So with 2nd gens I started only breeding A x Blue, A x Red, or B x Blue; and started getting plenty of A/Blue foals, including many superior to the higher papered parent.
I have some B papered 2g colts still (some I couldn't resist keeping), but I'm much much stricter on them. -
Thank you! I am very strict with colts, they must paper better and test superior. The mares ive just recently started testing, and ive found quite a few worth thans so got rid of those and keeping only superior if they paper the same as their dams. The only B papered I am keeping is the ones from my C/Yellow crosses because they test better and superior!

I only breed by generation. I won't buy horses that have uneven papers, personally. I start with B papered studs and Red papered mares. 2nd generation must be A or Blue papered... kinda stays that way until 5th generation. I'm okay with A and Blue papers up to the 4th generation but after that, if they aren't Star/Gold papered, they're culled. I comparison test everything now and only keep those that are superior :)Thanked by 1InTheStars1992
