What Happened..? Breeding Question
  • So I have a 14.1 (untested) stud that I bought to try and bolster my herd to try to breed my own 14PTs. However, the crop he bred absolutely flopped. The highest PT was a 13.4 (from a 13.6 mare) and the lowest was an abysmal 12.3 (from a 13.3 mare).
All my mares are 30+ pasture, neither stock is boosted.

I guess my question is, is it possible to breed 14PT horses without boosting both parents? Thank you!

  • I wish for the day I can say a 12.3 is abysmal ><
but I understood there was a range ( like .5 or so ) that all horses threw in breeding ; maybe you need over 13.7 to breed to him to get 14's?

  • 14.1 is his PT. If he isn't tested he may be a terrible breeder. Breeding ability is inherited. PT score does not.

  • @Ammit
I figured testing was required, but so many 14PTs I see are untested and/pr boosted. Is it something that, with testing but without boosts, you can achieve?
  • The short answer is yes. And no. I've been breeding high PT horses since pretty well my first month on here, and very rarely do I get 14 PT foals. I don't boost, but I do SBA and comp test. At this point, even the "best" foal of the crop is still AGA sire or dam. They're peaked for breeding performance. The PT is basically just a luck of the draw. You'll be hard pressed to find a 14 PT horse that has an AFPT even close to 14 PT.

    Edited for a typo/OCD.

  • Yup, if you want to breed 14s naturally you have to use the best of the best stock and that means using aggressively tested stock. It may be impossible for your untested colt to throw a 14, and even if he could, it may be impossible without the right mares to compliment him. It really depends on what his actual breeding ability is.
