Fillies rarely testing superior...
  • Does anyone else have this issue? I have so many colts that test superior to their sires. Hardly any of my fillies test superior to their dams... like 1 in 50, if that. Does anyone else have this issue? I only keep A and Blue papered second gens, I breed even generations, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
  • It could be that your A papered studs just aren't as good as your Blue-papered mares and the gap between them makes it less likely they throw a passing filly?

  • Maybe :\ How would I remedy that, though? Maybe I just need to go ahead and do superiority testing on the mares? But that's so much money when they're already papered higher than their dams. :(
  • If your Mares are comparatively too high it's the colts you need to test, but personally I test all of my horses.

I do not test them against their parents. I SBA test them, and then test them against what I believe is my highest papered horse of that gender. When a horse test superior to the benchmark I then use that horse for future testing (if money isn't an issue you go back and retest all of that gen).

  • Ah, I gotcha. I wouldn't even know where to start with finding a benchmark... I have SO many studs. I guess I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and have tons of show horses lol
  • I comp test all my foals that pass SBA and don't paper lower than their parents.
Even if a filly papers red and her foundation dam is yellow, I still comp test. I spay the girls that test AGA. I automatically spay all fillies that paper red at 3rd gen, I require blue papers, and I still comp test the blues. You get the picture. That way I only keep superior breeding stock.
  • There's some randomness at work. If you can afford it, you can GMT some of those superior colts to fillies.

Otherwise, look at the bright side; it helps keep your total numbers down in the long run! :D
  • ^^ This is what I do. I keep one colt from each stud, and turn the rest of the superior A's to fillies. It's expensive though, breeding and GMT'ing foals last season cost me 4mill.
