First GMT Project - Looking for Tips
  • Hey, basically just looking for some advice or suggestions on what to try or not to try. Essentially, I've been saving up a fair bit and don't want to make any irreversible mistakes. I can now add hom satin to this guy, but then I wouldn't have much left over to do anything else for a while. image

I quite like the look of black satin horses I've seen in the search, but I'm not sure if it is a good idea to start out a line with only one main horse. Should I wait until I can do one or two mares as well and get a hom second generation right away?

I've also seen a lot of folks GMT a whole variety of rarer genes onto the same foundation stallion rather than just adding one or two and was wondering if that is generally seen as good practice, or if it more comes down to personal preference and hbs availability. I'm personally happy with a plainer look, and it seems easier to try out different combinations if I keep him genetically simpler? Again, not looking to do anything too involved, maybe just pairing with some black and grey mares with various splash and white factor.

    Thanks for any advice!

  • First and foremost - have fun with it, that is the most important part after all!

Starting with just one stud is not a problem at all, they allow your GMT work to spread much faster than with mares. When I make a fancy mare, I always feel obligated to do lab breeding and sometimes find myself more frustrated because it's expensive and the foals are less likely to pass than pasture foals.

On Mesa I started with just one copy of mushroom on one foundation stud and I was still able to get an hom mushroom filly by gen 3. It takes time, but I find it very rewarding!

I would say the regardless if you like fantasy genes or simple genes, it's fun to have your main stud have variety, even if it's just with the kit genes, spend some time looking at all of the different patterns and pick fun combinations (while keeping the lethal white combinations in mind!). I really enjoy having a wide variety of foals which I also why I really love the phantom genes too. They are reasonably cheap and produce such a cool variety.

Last piece of advice is patience. I find it really helpful to start a new project that isn't quite of breeding age which forces me to spend a least a month thinking and planning. It also gives you longer to use the stud and maximize the value. Stallions come of age at 3 and I noticed that this guy is already 4 which means you have lost at least one breeding season with him which would be unfortunate.

Also just a heads up that in October, Ammit releases a bunch of phantom genes (bats, spiders etc). It might be fun to start a black satin stud this month and then finish him off with a fun phantom genes next month!

Hopefully that helped a little bit! There's definitely a lot to think about, but it sounds like you have already been doing your research and utilizing that search function which is such an awesome resource!
  • Wow, thanks so much for the great advice @LadyhawkeStables. I didn't even think about the 3 vs. 4 year old thing or about adding some possible phantom genes, which are really good things to consider. Also really good to know that it can be a bit tricky with the mares given they can't spread the genes as quickly as a stallion can. Might give it another month before I do anything in that case and see if I can find a slightly younger stallion who still fits my goals so I get as many breeding seasons as possible!

  • What are you looking for in a base?

  • You can usually find an Exceptionally Perfect Black herd helper on the forum, so that shouldn't be too high a bar to find a new horse for your project! I could keep an eye out for you as well, if you'd like, and give him to you for create plus the gene testing cost (to make sure he's EE).

  • I would say create him as you please, then save up some IVs 1and clone him. You can make the clone a mare and then you have a breeding pair in a few months! Just make sure you are the breeder of the original horse (like the stallion you have pictured above) and you can clone them. Cloning can really cost you some bucks in the long run, but it will still be much cheaper than GMTing hom satin onto another horse. For instance, on HJ2, I've got a satin mare (with some other GMT work which raised her price a bit) that will clone for 120 IVs (1.5 mil hbs) The cost to make a hom satin horse in the GMT lab without any other work is 400 IVs (5 mil hbs). That is a huge price difference! Every clone you make will get more expensive, but you could probably get several clones out and STILL save money. :) Every other gene you add to them that isn't normally found in a regular create raises the price, but with just two satins added and nothing else, I'm betting it would be pretty low cost to clone the first one.

  • Yeah, I think I'll be able to find a base without too much trouble. If you do happen to come across one @OscarWildin I would certainly take him off your hands, but don't feel the need to go out searching/creating for me, I'll keep an eye out for the exceptionally perfect black helper.

And thanks for the suggestion, @HighFiveAcres that is a great way to save hbs, but I'm just a basic upgrade account and can't clone horses for the moment. I'll keep the idea in mind though if I really start getting into doing GMT projects in the future and have a bit more money to spend on the game!
