Herd Download?
-
Hi there. I am wondering how long the Herd Download is going to be down? I find it to be a very useful tool for culling. -
Likely for the foreseeable future. It crashes the server in very bad ways...and multiple ways. From what I understand, it'd have to be completely re-coded to work, and that is a major major time eating project.
I used to do the same thing way before the download was around - I just kept my own spreadsheet going. If you update with every breeding season, it's not so hard to maintain. Setting it up wasn't fun, but keeping it going wasn't bad.Post edited by Gael4ce at 2015-03-08 18:05:05Thanked by 1Redbud -
We don't know. Every single part of the herd download crashes the site. It will have to be remade from scratch with a mess of features removed to make it safe to run again.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Between college and the baby, I don't have time for a spreadsheet system, but if the herd download's going to be down for a long time, it's something I will have to consider so I can get rid of the bad mares before they get dug into my bloodlines.
Any tips on setting one up? -
Do separate spread sheets for mares, stallions and show horses. (saves lots of scrolling and lets you look at like stallions and mares at the same time to plan your breedings)
And think what sort of categories you want to be able to search by.
I also turn the horse's name into a link so I can just click the name in my spreadsheet and go straight to the horse. -
When I cull, I basically have a few criteria. Average foal PT score. Age and number of foals - IE, if she's age 8 and does not have any intact foals, she gets culled. I also consider her papering for her generation - 4th gen red papers get culled automatically, but I would like to catch those sort of mares before I have to paper them to keep costs down. I assume that there are a few red flags to watch out for on those mares?

Yes - just watch the PT's of the foals she gives you. (That would be easy enough to track in a spreadsheet)

Thanks. I've had one mare give me a foal with a PT score lower than what I was looking for but she also papered blue so I'm assuming she's in the "gray" area and that her daughter may be the quality I'm looking for but just happened to have bad luck on the PT score roll.
