How do you Cull?
-
What factors do you take into account when deciding to cull a horse? I've been looking at daily payout, paying attention to whether that increases the horse's current lifetime payout. 5 seems to iffy, some increase the clp some it lowers. I'm thinking anything lower than a 6 should go bye-bye. I don't see keeping a horse that has entry fees larger than its income. I've got too many horses as it is, lots of x perfect and x pro, so with the exception of what I'm trying to breed for, does this make sense? How do you do it?
-
if i am keeping them for SHOW ; i started at a base of 10 for my 2gen ; and slowly worked up ; you really can't judge how a horse will do until their 2nd year . since they dont train as foals and there are only 2 in the class so its a dice roll where you place.
If i am keeping them for BREEDING ; genetically they need to be darn close to what i want ( and i ve been narrowing it down as the months go by ) and depending on the line i may or may not PT test them -
These are mostly Exc Producers that I have. The other's, such as my appaloosa's, I'm breeding matching generations on them and hoping i can increase breeding rather than pt. I've got way too many mares, I don't have time in one year/month to breed them all and of course each year will produce more mares. And I don't have enough star stallions. I also don't have the barns for them. Hoping payday will spare me a barn.Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2020-09-13 00:27:39

@OopsDOtCom are you dumping your weekly / daily bonus into IV's? i try to buy a couple every week so when the need a new barn comes around i can get it
-
I don't cull my show horses until they are 10 years old. All my show horses are foals I've bred, they mature with me. Starting at 10/11 years old, I use the search feature to sort them by points earned in the current year. I have to jump to the end of the list, and that shows me the lowest point earners. The lowest points are not increasing their daily payout anymore so they start getting the boot into auction. I do not cull on PT because the lower PT horses do well in the lower show levels. The 7W lelvel is my money making level.
I am a viscious culler of breeding horses. I only keep breeding horses that meet my genetic requirements. Nearly all my mares are superior and all my studs are definitely superior. If they missed DP or a S+, they get snipped and added to the showstring. I keep way more show horses than breeding horses. I have very few studs, as I am very picky and snip so many.Post edited by Humboldt at 2020-09-13 04:45:34 -
yes, knowing i had too many mares, i put them through breeding advice to thin them down. And I can't figure out where "spay/geld" does everything you've checked off, like the stallions you want to cull. Am I stuck doing one at a time?
-
if you know the names of the ones you want to cull you can check a bunch of them at a time on the barn level and click spay / geld on the bottom of the page ; it will ask you to confirm a few times to make sure but yes you can do an entire barn that way
-
I typically move the horses I want to cull into my primary barn.. I cull horses that don't fit my lines either by genetics or breeding ability. Depending on their PT I'll auction them if they are 10.5 pt or under, I'll make them show horses if anything over 10.5 pt..
Once everything I want to cull is in my primary barn, I'll mass speld, rename and change tack if a show pony or throw until auction if it's not up to show pony standards..
My show horses, I cull after 10 years old with less than 10k lifetime pay out left.. if there's sentimental value, I'll keep the horse until it passes.. -
Totally out of curiosity and nosiness how does a pixel come to have sentimental value? (you don't have to answer if you prefer not)Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2020-09-14 01:41:57

Is there a guideline for when a horses cost of entry fees exceed winnings? Would that be another way to decide if you want to keep or geld or sell? Income of 5 a day seems to be the "iffy" spot on the scale, anything 6 or above seems nearly always to bring in enough hb to keep his income higher than his costs, realizing cost of entering the shows changes as the horse changes levels.
-
is any of that coherent? i get the feeling I didn't explain very well.I just mean to track the horses value until retirement, and see if it is going up or down.Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2020-09-14 02:09:27

I am not sure what you mean by 5 or 6 a day?
Daily payout slowly but steadily increases as the horse gets older and trains ; then after the 10th birthday the " lifetime payout" changes
Sentimental value could be the very first horse you created or the very first RS ; or maybe the pixels remind you of a childhood pony you had, lol it depends
-
5 or 6 points. i'm coming to the conclusion it isn't worth the trouble to go through every 5 pointers so see if they gain in payout or if their hb points not advancing not per day, per where the horse currently is in it's training etc. I would then just automatically cull the 5s and lower taking into account the horses's age
-
I'm still not making sense am i?
-
a 5 PT score? or 5 hbs a day payout?
either of those is a no they are really not worth keeping
my show herd started as a mimimum 10 PT score and is now a 10.5 anything under that goes to auction.
-
Sentimental value as in; a horse I've spent real money on, a horse who resembles a real horse in my life, a horse who I've hit a milestone with.
Example is this mare, she was my biggest heartbreak. She was my first hom DP but didn't pass SBA.. Most of the players who have been playing since she was created and breed for DP, know this mare.
SH My Misfortune -
May I ask how you get life time payout?
-
@spirit626 go to the horse's page and in the column under the horse's ID, at the bottom of that column there will be their lifetime pay out
-
My sentimental pony is the one I created on my 25th birthday, it's a shame she's yellow papered as she mostly throws spelds, but she's beautiful and I won't get rid of her.

Oh wow, awesome looking.

Nothing wrong with a foundation being yellow paper, she's beautiful!
As for culling, I don't cull much, but if you were short of space putting spay/geld foals into auction and instead buying some under 6yo pointed foundations can be more economical in the short/medium term. But it's good to keep some foals to have those higher PT's grow up and add to the daily bonus.
Culling on show results I would only do if they have a daily show bonus under 200 and were levelled off in a non profitable spot, so at the bottom of their class thus unlikely add too many more points to their payout. They should be at least 10yo by then so can cash in whatever their lifetime payout is.
If you are trying to analyse show results to indicate a good shower, you can't really, except look at where they are in their classes and see when they might go up a class. A horse that levels off near the top of their class is a very good thing, they will often keep adding a lot of points during most of their lifetime -
Jus to echo Kintara's message, it takes ages for foals to gain points. Here's one of my 2G's that turned 4 this season - she just broke 100 points.
