Which is better
-
I've probably posted this question before so if I have I apologize. I'm trying to alter down some of my DP herd and some I don't know what to do with. They paper the same but test superior and are even bred 2nd to 3rd gen. Trying to get A/Blue paper but don't have enough to completely alter my B/Red herd.
Should Should alter them anyway? or try to bred them back to another of the same paper and testing? And which is better, papering up or testing superior to parent? Any help is appreciated. -
Are you leaving your mares in Pasture ? the foals get a bonus when you do ; I d start with that then if they babies are testing superior BUT the same paper level it only means they are not quite there yet.
you wont get Blue automatically at 3rd gen ; but you will get Higher quality reds if they test SUP to dam ; it takes a while just our generations are squished down to a month ( thenk you gods and goddesses and Ammit ) instead of actual year
-
All my mares have a 30+ days in pasture. I've started getting quite a few A/Blues just more stallions than mares and not enough to justify altering the entire herd of B/Red. Hence why I'm asking what I should do with my same paper/superior testers.
-
you only need 1 stud for every 50 mares ; am guessing your "Foundation" stud is young ; imo geld ALL the boys but maybe 1 test them against each other ; keep only the best of the bunch
mares can show til they are 4 intact( here i would only test against the dam and keep those who test higher ) and then toss them in the pasture and see what you get
altering your entire breeding stock every geneeration is gonna be super hard to get a decent sustainable breeding herd ; i ve seen in the past few months 60ish colts to 40ish fillies every season ; of those 60 colts i keep 2 intact and geld the rest -
As you get more A/Blue, just geld/spay the B/Reds. Although unless the B's have something special I'd just keep A stallions and still breed them to the red mares. It will help pick up the quality a bit

Also, you can throw mares in the Pasture at 3yrs old so they have full bonus in their first breeding season.HJ1: 266615

When I started out, I kept all the 3rd gen Bs and Reds because I didn't have anything better. Gradually as my lines improved from the pasture bonuses, I was able to start replacing those with 3rd gen As and Blues. Now I get more than enough A and Blue foals every season that I can afford to speuter all the B and Red foals for 3rd gen that I get and send them off to auction, unless they have a PT score of 11 which I then keep for my show horse herd.
The key is to comp test all the foals to their parents. Keep only the superiors and you'll see the quality improve.
If you can't afford to do that, then just comp test the colts to their sires. Keep the sups, and keep the mares that paper better than their dams. Don't keep yellow 2nd gen mares. Keep only Reds for 2nd gen.
