Considering restarting a line
  • I'm thinking about restarting my liver line completely from my own foundations. I have three studs I love, and a handful of good liver mares, but when I started this herd, I bought a bunch of 2G and 3G horses off other people to put some genes I couldn't afford at the time in my herd. Now I've been able to GMT my most recent project stud to essentially exactly what I want, and I'm wondering if I would have an easier time keeping things organized and something I'm more proud of if I bring it back to my own basics a little.

    I probably wouldn't get rid of all of my mares, but I kind of like the idea of using all my own horses to build my line.

    Has anyone else gone through this kind of change on here? (I mean, obviously someone has) I guess I'm looking for advice, but also just pros and cons, especially regarding improving quality.

  • I only own one horse bred by another player simply because I didn't have any mares to breed to my 2G Liver stud, personally, I prefer to do everything myself, incase it helps;

  • welp , since i wanted to breed HighChrome BlueRoan Appys and almost no one in here does that i DID start from the begining and it was pretty rough becuase at the start you dont have enough hb's to do everything right lol ; i started with c/yellow and worked my way up am on the 3rd and 4th generations now am still breeding my Foundies ( tho this month i might be loosing about 30 of them ) ; the good thing for you is you have a foundtion of HB's to pull from and more than likely a decent show bonus right now. just remember to geld the boys lol those are your base show herd :P

  • I've revamped my liver line about 3 times in the last year! It's definitely worth it and so much more rewarding when 99% of your lines come from your original stock!
    I'm now getting 4G Star/Gold horses from B/Red foundations
  • This is all really helpful and encouraging! I think I might go ahead and alter or sell a lot of the horses I've bought or bred from lined horses I've bought, and use the gorgeous foals I've bred these last couple seasons. There's a couple of outside horses I really love and would love to keep on hand because they're perfect for what I'm breeding for, but I think a lot of quality is going to show when I finally decided to splurge on a premium upgrade and comparison test my colts.

    My silver black/chinchilla line is all my own, and I'm really really enjoying how that's coming along. It's so satisfying knowing you grew it yourself.

  • @annismyrph if you have the hb’s I strongly recommend switching some of the colts to mares as the mare breeding quality can stagnate faster as you keep a wider pool. If you switch some of the AGA to your new stud to mares you'll introduce some great quality broodmares to your program that otherwise would have been show stock - and instead you can test your mares thoroughly and use the ones that didn't make the cut a show stock.
