Foundation Breeding Question
  • Hello,
Is it ok to breed A papered foundation stallions to Red papered Foundation Mares? Or am I setting myself up for failure as the A papered stallions are superior to the Red papered Mares?

I have been doing this for a few breeding seasons and it just hit me that this might not be such a great idea. My thinking in the beginning was that I'm getting a higher quality foal.

Thank you in advance for your wisdom!
  • If the mare is kept in pasture you have a better chance of intact foals ; the foals get a "pasture" bonus when coming froma pasture kept mare. Not sure how it works exactly but if the parents are evenly bred i have had good success with Intact from A/ red pasture crosses

  • Breeding an A papered foundation stallion to Red papered foundation mares would result in a lot of spayed/gelded foals, but any _fillies_ that remain intact after SBA are far more likely to test superior to their dams. Colts, on the other hand, are far less likely to test superior if they pass SBA. They don't have the quality of their dam to help push them past the quality of their sire.

That is why I only use B/C papered foundation stallions and Yellow/Red papered foundation mares. It's easier to get intact foals from those crosses that pass SBA and are more likely to test superior.
  • I breed B papered foundation stallions to Yellow mares, which is pretty much the same thing. I like it because it means those that do pass are superior to their yellow dams, I still get some superior colts, but not as many as with the Red papered mares. And yes more get spayed/gelded. I'm ok with that as I wouldn't want to use a C stallion with Yellow mares and get a heap of yellow gen2's. Which I'd have to spay/geld anyway.
So depends on your own goals

  • Oh and yes if you are going to do it, definitely the full pasture bonus is the way to go

  • agreeing with the pasture comments, I have all exper/xpro mares in pasture and cover them with my A foundation studs, always get a whole bunch of blue 2g mares which is exactly what I am after :D

  • Awesome thank you everyone!
  • I breed at least one C stallion and most of my foundation mares are Yellow, I get far more Reds than Yellow papered fillies from that particular cross. However, it may be because I do full pasture breeding, the foundation ladies have their own pasture and stay there year round.
  • i ONLY breed B foundation Stallions ; my mares live in their pastures til they out live breeding age ; and I breed him to both yellow and reds; am actually going through my pastures now ; pulling out the "varnish" apps for their own place and am noticing really nice % of blue 2g Fillies from even the yellow mares
