  • Do all colts that paper lower than sire get snipped in the Gelding advice test?

Reason I ask is I just got a colt by a B papered sire who passed all tests but then papered C
All my colts that paper C have previously been snipped in their tests.
  • No. They have be significantly lower. Your B may be just above the cut off line, and the C just below.
  • Ahhh so he might be worth keeping intact and putting to a good quality mare when he's old enough.
    Thanks Gael4ce
  • Actually, I would never ever breed a C papered 2nd gen (except for one colt I had on HJ2, but that has absolutely nothing to do with breeding quality :P ). I never keep anything that isn't superior to sire, and a C papered 2nd gen is pretty poor. And if you breed him to good quality mares, your lines will be of uneven quality, wich will make it harder to get intact offspring. The best way to improve your lines is to breed horses of as even a quality as possible.

  • Jemima - lower is still lower. ;) I wouldn't keep him to breed with either. You'd be going the wrong way with quality. Your current stallion put to a same level high quality mare will likely produce a much better baby.

  • I'll snip him and give him a chance to prove himself in the show ring.
Shame as I was trying to get some pretty genes into my 2nd gen stock, he'll just have to be a pretty show pony or head off to the auction.
  • Luckily, in the lower generations breeding colts that paper superior to their sire is actually quite easy to accomplish provided you're using similar quality mares and are patient. Glad to see you gelded him, give the breeding another shot next season and you might get lucky!
