Does anyone know why we say spayed mare? Just curious because we don't say gelded stallion...Bluegrass: EquineRescue #200159

In real life it’s much more difficult to spay a mare. The stallion’s testicles can be removed quite easily without surgery (unless he’s a cryptorchid, but that’s not very common). A mare is spayed by removing her ovaries, which are obviously inside the body, thus requiring expensive surgery. The surgery is also risky because there is often a risk of internal bleeding. It takes two to make a baby, so since a stallion is so easy to castrate compared to a mare, it’s easier and safer to snip the boy and leave the girl alone :)I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!

Some people mash up the two terms and use speld(ed). *SHUDDER* Altered is a MUCH more appropriate term.

Because the castration of male animals has been done for some ten thousand years and spaying of females for a few decades. We have a word for gelding because geldings have been around longer.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )
