Halo Varnish is now available on new creates, the GMT lab, and the RGS sale page
-
Halo Varnish has landed in the RGS sale, the GMT lab, and the create a horse page.
This new gene is open, shareable, and can show up randomly on any new foundation horse. It is semi-dominate with one copy causing a halo effect around the edge of appaloosa spots and two copies creating a more pronounced effect.
Halo is caused by varnishing at the edge of a horse's spots, which means it causes small spots to look fuzzy and requires large spots to produce clear halo marks. Horses with heavy sooty and DP, and with only one copy of LP are your best bet to get clear halos but halo varnish will show on all appaloosas. Halo varnish is separate from traditional varnish and snowflake varnish. It shows up better if those genes are present but it does not require them.
The price for Halo is $5 USD per copy and it will be for sale through the end of January.

Thanks, Ammit! You're amazing!
Note: I just looked, and in case anyone is confused, the formal name of the gene in the GMT lab is "Varnish Regulator 2". Since it's gene test indicator is H, that should be obvious, but I had to look twice to be sure, myself.Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2020-12-26 08:55:36 -
Oh I'm so glad you clarified that! I just saw that when I was modifying a horse and came to see what that one is-I thought we got halo and something else at first :)

Varnish Regulator 2 is the name of the gene, halo is the name of the allele of that gene. Same as KIT is the name of the gene but roan, sabino etc are alleles of that gene.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Thanks for adding that explanation, Ammit. Agouti is another gene with various alleles, as I have long known, but I never thought to relate the new gene to the ones with several alleles that I already was familiar with.

Cream also has multiple alleles (cream, pearl, sunshine, and snowdrop) :)
Alleles are just cool!I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!
