What are the chances for a superior mare if the sire was boosted?
-
I dont comparison test all my horses "yet" and hopefully soon ill have bigger funds to do so. My question is if you have a boosted stallion that tested supirior to its sire " A papered foundation " to red papered mares with pasture boost, how many of those fillys would test supirior to there dam?
I could see colts being weaker or the same compared there sire as they come from red papered mares and a result most would be show ponies only. But for the fillys i would think it would produce a stronger group of blue papered 2g mares to eventually cross with a supirior 2g stallion.
-
You should get a goodt amount of superior blue mares, I get a lot from just crossing A papered straws to Red eggs in the AI lab. Pasture boost will increase those odds a little.
-
I get a lot of both superior colts and fillies from my pastures, i use all A papered foundations and red exper/expro. I usualy end up gelding almost all the colts anyway as they are only het for the genes i want (i use colts from AxBlue foundation crossed for my 2g studs mostly)
I can find some actual numbers and data if you want when i wake up tomorrow?HJ1: 133971 -
So far i found a good amount of the colts were gelded just by testing them. Some came out same as sire and 1 or 2 were supirior but like silvercreekfarm said they end up heterozyogous for the genes wanted. Im slowly working on improving my mares genetically so more foals come out with some homozygous traits im looking for.
Silvercreekfarm if you could i would appreciate it.
My goal is to keep the colors i want yet improve paper and pt scores . I know alot of people focus on stallions but i feel having supirior mares are so important in better pt and papered intact foals. -
I comp test all foals that pass SBA. I keep only superiors
-
If the foals from an A stallion with Red papered mares pass SBA, then they mostly have to be superior to dam to pass. The ones that pass should all be blue papered too, although you'll probably get the odd red one seeing he's only just an A
-
I avoid boosted stock for the most part because I find them really difficult to work with. I prefer working with normal lines that pass SBA and test superior because they're easier to work with, plus I don't have the budget to start 3rd gen quality lines at foundation level.

Last season for one of my boosted foundation boys:

out of 50 pasture foals, had 17 fillies, of which 4 of them were Blue 2gs.
Going off which images were generated on the colts, there was about 13 colts that passed SBA, but I gelded all but one of them. There would have been a mix of AGA and Sup colts out of those that passed SBA.

Out of 30 pasture foals, 14 fillies in total and 7 Blue 2g intacts after testing.
16 colts, 6 passed SBA but were gelded due to being het for the genes i want.

Same stud, 2 yr olds. ignoring the first 6 foals on the list (embryos) out of 50 pasture foals, there were 21 fillies. 6 of them passed testing ect and were blue papered 2g mares.

different stud
ignore first 3 and last colt (embryos)
Out of 50 pasture foals, 23 fillies and 12 intact blue 2gs.

same stud, 3 yr olds. Had to manually count these babies because i did a huge number of embryos and without tatooing them idk how to sort those ones out from the pasture ones. Out of 50 pasture foals, 24 fillies, 16 intact blue 2gs

A few seasons ago I was auctioning a bunch of my spelds if they were under 10pt and over 11.1pt so I can't really get other accurate data from my older stallions unfortunately. but just even for myself, it is super interesting to see what a difference there is between my own stallions, even though technically they are all the same breeding level. Some are obviously better filly producers than others? But either way you still get a lot of spelds, but the 5-10 Blue mares each season is more than worth it for me. I think i only have one or two red 2g mares that I kept because they passes SBA and were chimeras.HJ1: 133971 -
Silvercreekfarm thank you for the data! My mary go round stallion is one i have noticed to have better quality fillys than colts. :)
I have found with him that pasture mares that have been in pasture the full amount of time have produced all intact fillys. There may be 2 every season that will randomly paper red but i also have a cross between red/yellow mares in the pasture currently. Therefore if the red papered filly came from a yellow papered mare it could still be supirior. Untill i sit down and test every single one of them i wont know for sure.
His colts almost all of them the last two breeding seasons have been gelded just from standard testing. Maybe 2 make it out intact with A papers but the chances for supirior would "i think" be less. I shall see this season.
Oh i almost forgot. I have noticed breeding him out of pasture the spay/geld rate is high. Most of those who have bred to him have ended up with a spay/geld. Which makes me wonder if it would be best to keep him in house and only sell foals that dont fit my goals. -
