Stallions- to keep or not
  • Finally got around to comp testing the last 4 seasons of colts. All from different stallions and most have a different kit gene (kit M, roan, Sb1.). I’ve got a pretty good mix of Superior and AGA.

Only 1 stallion doesn’t have a superior colt yet, should I keep his best AGA colt? This was probably his last breeding season.

Should I alter all the other AGA colts from the other stallions? I really need to cut down on my stallions. 60+ is way to many Lol. Mares are my next go round but one thing at a time. Lol. Thanks in advance.
  • If you are breeding for a quality increase in each generation, then alter all foals that test "about as good as" their parents, colts and fillies both.

The colt with the elderly sire - unless that lineage holds special meaning to you, geld the colt and (hopefully) enjoy the nice mares he sired. If the lineage does mean something to you, keep the colt as a back up. Hopefully the sire will live past the next rollover and you'll get one more breeding season out of him. :) In my barn, I'd geld the colt and then find the best filly he'd sired and gender switch her. Cheaper than buying boosts. :D

  • That's what I've done, Johara. Sometimes I got an AGA boy from a stallion but he sired a higher paper filly, so I would do a gender switch.
  • @Johara that actually sounds like a really good idea to me. That particular stallion was my #2, lost my #1 at rollover. He is a consistent A/Blue producer of 16.3-17.1 babies but I think I’ll just switch his best filly that fits that line. Thank you
  • Just looked, his best filly for that line is a Gold paper. I think that will bump it up a notch.
  • Excellent!

Also, with a Premium upgrade, there is the option to clone as well - as long as you're the breeder of the horse.

  • Unfortunately I’m not the breeder. I bought him for the hopeful potential influx of height which he did well on.
