I’m autistic
  • So some of you may already know this, but I’ve decided to add this to my signature so everyone knows.

My autism prevents me from communicating properly. I can’t detect sarcasm if it’s not blatantly obvious, I don’t pick up on social cues, I usually can’t tell when I’m over sharing or talking about things that should remain private, and I can’t tell the difference between arguing and explaining.

All of this is even harder online because I can’t attempt to decipher facial expressions or body language to see if I’ve said something wrong.

I’ve gotten into some scuffles with a few members due to my communication issues, and while each of them have been resolved, I’d like to try to prevent that from happening.

If I say something stupid, mean, hurtful, offensive, rude, or inappropriate, there’s a 99% I have no idea that I did it, and I apologize in advance.

I appreciate your patience with me!

  • Hi, I just wanted to say that I think you have been doing a great job expressing your self here and I love your creative writing!

As a fellow autistic person I have a hard time with sarcasm and social cues too and tend to take things very literally. I get confused when talking to others a lot and don't make friends very easily in real life, but I have found that its been different on here. Most people here are open, kind and have been willing to help a lot. So even though misunderstandings can/do happen, they don't hold it against you and you can say your sorry and everyone moves on.

Its been less stressful for me to talk because the community is so caring here and if I am still not sure about something or how to respond, then I can always get help from my mom or ask my sisters for clarification! Thats what works for me anyway and I thought it would maybe help a little. :)

  • Thank you! I was finally diagnosed 2 years right before I’ve started college, and that really helps (the testing was covered by my local vocational rehab office).

My mom helps me a lot and does teach me a lot about social things, but some things are hard for her to explain to me because she’s not autistic. Plus she has to deal with my dad, who is ten times worse than me and is obviously where I got my autism from (I think his dad had it based on behavior), but he refuses to get tested. Add in some severe ADHD for him and some ADHD and severe anxiety for me and mom has to deal with a lot. I’m also an only child, so it really helps when my friends can help teach me things.

Creative writing is one of my favorite things to do! For the contest writing, I only planned the first sentence of each part, then I just let my mind loose and waited to see what I ended up writing. I was definitely not planning to end up with a The Santa Claus/Elf/Shrek/Rise of the Guardians/everything else crossover, but I really liked it and apparently everyone else did too :)

  • I was diagnosed when I was in high school before my 16th birthday. I struggled a lot with being in school and it was clear that something was wrong, so my mom had me tested. She had started home schooling me around then too, which has helped cut the stress and anxiety a lot for me.

Wow! Well having friends is great too! My biological dad was never around and left when I was still a baby, he was never tested but is very possible thats were I got mine as well, based on behaver anyway. I live with my mom and step dad now and between us (he & I both have a lot of other medical issues including OCD, so we keep her pretty busy too) my mom has to help with/deal with alot and she is diabetic, so it certainly isn't always easy for her, which is why I have to ask my sisters to help me some times too! I have 2 of them and 1 brother. .....and a dog who is my best friend lol.

You really have some great ideas for your writing! I had a lot of fun reading it all! I really liked the ending that you gave it too! It was my favorite part because my mares clue. For me, one of my favorite things to do is art(and reading a lot of books)! Its fun and I love creating new things & reading, also helps me when I feel too overwhelmed or stressed! :D

  • Thank you for sharing! I'm not autistic, but I have several friends who are and share about their experiences and different resources, and it's been really helpful to know how to support them in ways I don't require support.

I know this whole community is more than happy to be understanding and patient with anyone who needs it, and I'm glad you feel comfortable enough here to share yourself and be vulnerable with us!

  • @HorseAngel thanks!

My mom had to quit her job to take care of me full time when I was born. We both have several physical medical conditions as well, so even though we knew something was being missed and suspected some form of autism because of my behavior, we had to prioritize our physical health because insurance wouldn’t cover the testing costs and we only had one income. After the test mom and I were just like, whelp, that explains a lot!

  • @Nightphoenix, it was pretty much the same with me, my mom wasn't really surprised after the testing either, she pretty much knew lol. My other medical problems certainly had priory, since I ended up in the hospital at 7 because of my severe auto immune condition, after that she was mostly a stay at home mom so she could give me the care that I needed and ready to run me back to the hospital if something went bad again. I also have arthritis at a early age that causes a lot of pain because of my immune condition. For years though, I really struggled to keep up in school who only classed it as some "learning disability" and didn't really offer much in the way of help, i had a hard time dealing with daily things (still do) and people who didn't understand why I couldn't be "normal". So when we finally had enough to cover the cost ourselves and my other medical issues were under control, my mom went and had me tested. I had to undergo a lot of physical therapy in that time and I have had emotional support dogs which has been great! They really help me deal with everyday life. The one I have now is a 1 year old girl named Blue, I named her that because she is a grayish blue color lol. :x

  • I am nearly 29 and strongly suspect I’m Autistic. I keep this as secret as I can because of stigmas. It’s so hard, but, for me, I guess it’s better to be known as “weird” or “quirky” or “rude.” And just try harder to fit in better.

I remember consciously teaching myself to make eye contact in the 5th grade. And teaching myself to make certain facial expressions in the mirror. I do pretty well with sarcasm and humor, although lots of times people miss my humor and my sarcasm. Oops. (Oh. Wait. They thought I was serious. Oh crap. Oh crap. Oh crap)

I have a bad habit of laughing at inappropriate times. It somehow became my default when I have no idea how to respond otherwise. (Why did you laugh? ....uh... I don’t know? Why are you asking? Was that wrong? Oh shoot. Oh shoot)

I have sensory sensitivities. I am both a seeker and an avoider, depending on the stimulus.

I’m pretty sure it runs in my family. Like, a lot. And is mostly undiagnosed because so many have it that they think it’s “normal” and only see autism as people with really high support needs.

98% certain my father is autistic. 99% sure his older brother was as well, with high support needs, but that was long enough ago that it wasn’t as understood then, and he passed long before I was born.

  • I used to work in a school as a Teaching Assistant. I have worked with two boys (at different times) who were both diagnosed with Autism and I went on lots of courses and learnt a lot about the condition. My younger daughter and I used to joke that we both had some Autistic traits but when she entered her late teens and then started University she began to exhibit worrying levels of anxiety. Eventually the University suggested she might be Autistic and she was tested and diagnosed at age 23. I was devastated that with the knowledge of the condition that I had I was still unable to pick it up myself. I think it was because when you live with someone you take it that this is just them being themselves coupled with the fact that, at the time, the perceived wisdom was that fewer girls had the condition than boys. (This is not true, it is just that girls are better at watching other people to see how they should behave/react).

Fast forward several years and my daughter has a job where the people are aware of her difficulties, she met a lovely guy who loves her for who she is and married her, and they have a daughter who is nearly two years old.

My daughter needs emotional support from time to time (unsurprisingly, she had quite bad post natal depression) but she has devised quite a lot of coping strategies.

If anyone is a fan of the TV programme The Big Bang Theory, our favourite quote is 'I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.' :)

  • Have you guys read up on Temple Grandin? She is autistic, works with livestock (I mean, went to college and got degrees in livestock...stuff) and has written several books. I particularly liked Animals In Translation. They made a movie about her, too, and it was pretty good!

I don’t pay any of his training costs and do a pay it forward thing instead, which is amazing, but as a result my contract is very strict, so I’m sorry, but I can’t give you his name.

Scorpion is like the most amazing show EVER! I’m still furious that it got canceled :-(( Thank goodness for fanfiction :)

  • @Nightphoenix, Oh thats ok! I was just curious about him! Anyway Scorpion sounds like a very good show! Sad that it was concealed (maybe it will come back?) but I may have to watch it lol.

@ConfluenceStable, I love reading and that seems really interesting and amazing! I think I have found my next reading subject, thank you! :)

  • Two of my friends have autistic kids and I have slowly started to read up on it some more. My one friends son is non verbal (but is going to therapy) and my other friends daughter is verbal but I can definatly tell she’s on the spectrum.

  • I know dyslexia isn't the same as autism, but it is still a struggle to go through school because of it. I had one instructor in college who had dyslexia, and through sheer determination is a pilot for the coast guard. Just wanted to tell you because I want to say don't ever give up hope.

I have problems of my own, and am finding it frustrating to "fit in" with the people here, and I think I'm failing.

  • I second the suggestion that you read Temple Grandin's books, or watch the film about her. She's an amazing woman who changed the entire meat industry from the perspective of a cow!
And From what I can see you guys are doing great here, None of us can detect sarcasm very well here, without lots of emojis...
  • Just wanted to say no matter what, spectrum or not, I love you all in this community. We all have our struggles but this is our safe place to be us and I love it here. I know it’s not the same but i am very ADHD (kinda explains why I did so well and loved being in the military lol). As a kid I struggled a LOT to try to fit in, as an adult after the military, I just do me. I’ve learned how to control me. I suspect my son is also ADHD, and my brother thinks my nephew is as well. We just have to do us and try our best to live our lives the best we can.
  • I'm autistic too! Discovered halfway through college. I find communicating online is easier than in person, so i love having this forum to chat on.

Is great to see so many of us here! :D
