He's W1 is expressing, its the white markings on his belly and body! The white genes don't always turn a horse entirely white, it really depends on the amount of white load that they have (called there White Factor or WF) which can range from none, minimal, light, medium, large and extensive. Only some of the white genes are lethal when together, W20 is a good example that is not hom lethal and there are many different genes for white markings as well, including splash 1/2/3, appaloosa, Kit M, Sabino, Tobiano, Roan, W8 .........ect. Anyway, there are horses with white genes that show no white markings at all, even with a light WF, so his is showing up nicely!

You should probably also be informed that it's not just Kit mutations that produce lethal results. The various splash genes can be dangerous as well.

Splash 1 never causes problems when homozygous or combined with Splash 2 or Splash 3. Depending on the amount of White Factor the sire and dam carry, it might push a moderately risky Kit mutation cross to lethality, however. (I think.)

Splash 2 and Splash 3 are both homozygous lethal and and are also lethal with each other. They may also cause problems when combined with Kit mutations when high white factor is also involved.

The frame gene, Olw (Overo Lethal White), is always homozygous lethal because it causes a foal to be born with an incomplete digestive tract. It can also push high white factor Kit mutations into lethality.
