Anybody else having a bad season?
  • This breeding season is horrible :(( Between my foundations and second gen horses, only five...FIVE keepers out of almost 300 horses! I haven't even gotten many decent speldings either :/ I still have pastures that haven't bred yet, bootstraps and my 3+ gen horses but I'm not holding my breath at this point. What do you guys do on a bad year? Do you guys go through the mares/stallions with a fine tooth comb or just hope for a better outcome next season?

  • Are you breeding similar paper Qualities as well as Generation? like a B Stud to a Red mare ? did you leave the mares in the pasture for the full 30 day boost for the foals? I find ( usually ) if I breed Red/ B with a full 30 day bonus on the mares its about a 10% Alter rate. it does go to a higher Alter Rate as the generation progress but not usually that high . Bootstrap mares dont get tested for "breeding" usually ; given the stud is usually significantly higher papered and / or generationlly higher as well ; those are your "stock" for your show herd, Geld and keep the boys breed the mares back to daddy

  • I let my pastures do their own thing so I keep my mares in there all the time (generally just mares that aren't showing well anyways). I move stallions over once I'm done breeding for that season, pick a few, and shove them in the pastures so they generally have 15+ days if I start breeding early. Not sure if stallions get perks for the pastures but I try to rotate regardless. I am breeding paper to paper so theoretically, I should be getting a decent % of keepers but not this season. I just started comparison testing two seasons ago so not all of my breeding stock is comp tested unfortunately and obviously can't do much about my foundations. I try to keep my foundations Herd Helpers and Specials but even my Top Notch Producers didn't give me squat this year lol. I do Strict Breeding Advice on everyone, even my bootstraps...it's just habit at this point haha. Maybe I'm doing it wrong :/

  • I took a quick look at your pastures ; you have both 1g and 2g in some of them ; Stallions do not get the bonus bump on foals, only the mares do. Also ; PT score ( show ability has 0 to do with breeding ability ) dont forget Man0'War ( for example ) was an AMAZING race horse but did squat in the breeding shed lol . Try to re organize the pastures a bit ; Yellow / red mares should be covered by a B Stallion of the same generation. If the foal papers higher than the parent ( IE a red filly from a yellow broodmare ) generally they are better then the parent ; am not sure how you cull ; but thats a good place to start. snip everything that doesnt . Bootstraps will almost ALWAYS get altered when you SBA them ; given they are so uneven.

  • Whenever I have a bad season I just shrug it off because there's always next season plus it means more show horses.
  • Thanks annismyrph, I just bought a few pastures to re-organize so hopefully that helps out next season (too late for this one haha). My bootstraphs aren't "super" bootstrappy, usually just missing a gen on one side so weirdly enough the mares SBA breedable most of the time. I just sent all my subpar bootstrap stallions to auction to clear some room. Not sure why I kept so many anyways. After this season I'll do more organizing although it might hit me in the daily payout department haha.

  • I find myself loaded down with boys ALOT ; i have become really good with the snippers lately and usually keep those for my show herd ; its harder in the begining when you dont have as much room ; and then its harder in the middle when you keep running OUT of room lol. you ll get there

  • I just bought more barns as well via Voucher Exchange hehe. Now I actually have extra barns for "spring cleaning" after my pastures are done. I have a lot less money, but I have quite a few speldings that really start showing next year so not toooo worried about that part. I've gotten a ton better than when I first started when it comes to keepers/culls. I literally kept everyone haha. I'm finally at the point where I can comp test everyone that passes SBA and only keep the ones that are better than their parents. I did keep two AGA this year though, hopefully they produce decently. It's a very slow marathon for me but I'm slowly getting it. One day I'll specialize in colors/genes but I'm not quite there yet.

  • I have never had that bad of luck with foundation or 2g horses. Everyone plays the game differently because we all have different goals. I’m assuming that your current goal is getting more babies to pass testing.

You said you breed mostly by paper levels, that works for Foundations and second generation, but after awhile it doesn’t work anymore because the higher the paper levels go the bigger the range within those paper levels get, and the larger range of score/papers those horses can throw. Using generation as well as papers helps make sure that you are breeding similar quality horses to each other.

That’s why breeders who bootstrap don’t BA that particular line. There is a large gap between the breeding abilities of their horses. Yellow mares to star studs and the foal papers can be anywhere in the middle. To a smaller extent the same is true of each paper levels. An A papered foundation stallion bred to a 4th generation Blue papered mare most likely won’t produce a foal that passes BA let alone SBA, they might but odds aren’t in their favor. While a 3rd or 4th gen A papered stallion would have a much better chance of a foal passing BA with that mare, or even a 4g star stallion.
  • Right now I'm trying to get my daily payout to a point that I can start specializing in certain colors/genes and not have to worry about how many keepers I actually get. For awhile I may have to use studs, which can be spendy and I'm far from rich right now haha. My breeding herd is relatively small compared to everyone else and definitely not super (I'm lucky if I get a 11 PT keeper right now, average is about 10.50 or less). I have realized I'm doing the bootstrapping thing totally wrong so next season I have it set up that I should *theoretically* get higher PT scores...so I can keep fewer lower PT horses. At least I can save money on BA/SBA with the "new" bootstrapping process haha.

  • Personally my biggest mistake starting this account was bootstrapping to build a show herd. I have two accounts that I started at the same time one where I started with foundations and bred a line that way and this account which I started out bootstrapping. This accounts daily payout is half of the other accounts and is slowly catching up. My daily bonus only started growing when I ditched my bootstraps and started a regular line with foundations.

Also I don’t cull my show horses at all until they are 10. I keep every spay/gelded foal I breed, and don’t pay attention to PT at all. I just looked and my top 10 show horse’s PTs are in the 10-11 range(2g-3g). This boy is my 19th best show horse and if I had requirements based on PT or consistentsy I wouldn’t have him. image
