Culling the Show Herd > Quick & Easy Tips PLEASE!!!
  • I have two 1000 stall barns & three 210 stall barns for my show horses and they are FULL. I'm probably gonna have another 300 foals next season and I know I'm over due for a culling.
What are some quick and easy tips to cull out your show herd. If you have a way of searching and sorting the herd to speed up the process please share.
    Projects:
    - Lined KitM (black base lines) & (chestnut base lines)
    - Leopard Appaloosas
    - Overall PT development/increased show potential
  • I cull anything under 10.5PT in my show herd to start with , then i go by age then where they are placing in classes

  • I cull my show horses by how much they are worth compared to their daily payout. Generally, I sell off show horses that are worth less than 2500 and have less than 100 hbs daily payout.

  • Lol you’re going to get three different answers.

I only cull show horses 10 and older. And I cull based on how many points they have earned each month. I search by barn how many points a horse has earned and anything that has earned less than 20 points in two weeks gets auctioned, no matter what their daily payout is. I’ll cull at least the last 10 pages of my show horses. My show horses names all start with ZZ, when I decided to cull them I place an A in front of their name select them from the barn page then auction them from there. Their daily payout rises based on the number of points they have, so as soon as they quit making more points their daily bonus quits getting bigger, and their lifetime payout gets smaller as time goes on, to me it’s more beneficial to auction them off get a lump sum and give their stall to another horse. I use 20 points because it seems like a fair number and I have a large show herd, I used to use 10-15 as my cut off.

Example of my show horses. I’m going to cull the last 13 pages of this search.

  • I'm with Silverstar, I cull the older horses that no longer are placing well to earn points. I auction them to make room for younger show horses to come up that will earn far more points. You can narrow the search by Age Over 9 and sort by Points This Year. Ithen jump to the last page and start sending them to auction. I work my way up thru 5 to 10 pages at time.

  • So if I have a 15 year old horse, who has say $60 daily payout . Is leveled off . But does a 100+ points in 2-3 weeks...is that good or should I make room?
I feel like I have a lot of in-betweeners right now because I used to throw all my old broods/studs in with the show barns and didn't start keeping foals till the last few months and they're still young.

  • Yeah, that's good, keep that horse.
  • Thanks for asking this...I am horrible at culling and I desperately need to. Still a little hard to wrap my head around but in theory, looks to be easy-ish haha.

  • Typically;; once a horse "levels" off if he doesnt bring in enough in 2 days to cover BOTH his show entries ; I cull them

  • I'm with those who cull based on who is still earning points & is leveled off. I dont pay attention to PT score, and nothing that isnt leveled off gets culled etc. When I cull I pull up a search with all geldings/spayed mares over the age of 10 sorted by points earned. Then I start from the end of the list and work my way forward culling only those who have leveled off. I do skip over those who hold more than 1800pts currently, as a "gamble" to see if they survive another year. However far I get by the end of the month is how much I cull. I usually dont get past those who have made 30+ points in the month though. I have waaaay to many horses. This method seems to be working pretty well though, even though my numbers have been mostly stable for the last few hajinc "years" my income has gone up more than a million dollars a day. (again I have too many horses). I have 1204 search pages of spayed mares/geldings over 10 currently.

  • I think I'm getting the idea of it! The new list format shows the points TY/Total, I sorted by Points TY and could see most of the necessary details.

What's everyone's opinions on consistent vs. inconsistent. Do you just cull out at foaling?

  • I’ll keep inconsistent foals for show horses because they sometimes earn a good chunk here and there, but once they are 10 or older, I cull them if I need space.
I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!

  • Consistency doesn't matter to me as long as they earn their keep.

  • I agree with both Nightphoenix and Forestshadow ; i also dont usually PT score my breeding "herd" until the later generations anyway as it really doesnt have anything to do with breedabilty ; if they are auto altered at BA check ; i ll PT score them but usually just show them til the level out

  • Some of my best show horses are inconsistent. So they only get culled if they are no longer earning enough points once they are 10+.

  • Inconsistent horses can be great show horses! I’m just weird and prefer consistent horses :)

  • Consistency doesnt matter to me in my show herd either if they are earning. I control consistency through my breeding program so while I do have inconsistent horses I dont tend to to have very inconsistent ones, that seems to be enough to keep my show herd in line.
