color of this mare
  • Hey everyone! I hope everyone's day is going awesome! :) ok I have this mare.. she is older, but she is supposed to be a bay App.. here's her info

My question is.. why is she white?
  • She is in the small pasture if anyone wants to look at her info
  • Most Appies "Bleach" or Varnish as they age the older they are the whiter or lighter they become :)

  • so that is why some of my foal pics show tons of color, but when they get their adult pic, they are white.. Thanks :)
  • Appys and Grays, both of them gray out with age, and there's not much we can do about it. I started out not breeding for appy's for a long time, but I've given in and now own quite a few. I've also started a line of gray ponies both here and on the Forest server, to honor the Camargue ponies of southern France.

  • It’s also important to note that graying out and varnishing are caused by different genes :)

  • Sorry to hop on your post, but I’ve been wondering about this. Does that mean all appaloosas will varnish as they age? Or only the ones that carry varnish regulator? I have some appys in my barn that do carry it, and some that don’t. Just wondering what to expect as they age.
  • Almost all of them will, yes. Halo was introduced fairly recently and they were varnishing out long before that :)

  • The only ones that don't varnish are the EvergreenBoughs ; Ammit did some magic there ; I think thats the only one though

  • @Nightphoenix @annismyrph - Thanks for clarifying. I was hoping not all would- but it is, what it is. :(
Also, speaking of that, what does the varnish regulator do then? Does it make them loose color quicker?
Good to know about the Evergreen Boughs though!

  • When varnish regulator/halo is combined with DP, the spots get really big with a circle around them like a halo.

Kinda like this guy! He’s a chimera, but you can still see what I mean.

  • Oh, that’s cool! Thank you for the help, I appreciate it. I’m newer to HaJ and still learning what some of the genes do :)

  • To add to @annismyrph’s comment there is a hidden varnish factor. I understand it in my head as slow varnish, regular varnish and fast varnish. Since they are hidden genes I’m sure, I don’t have them completely understood; this is just how I think of them. My understanding was Evergreen bows are hom for slow varnish. I have had regular appaloosas in the past who were also extremely slow varnish they were 15/16 and still had most of their color. So it’s possible for other horses to have it, but it’s hard to know for sure since it’s untestable. Some players breed for that slower varnish or try to. Snowflake is the exact opposite of slow varnish.

I don’t really care to mess with Lp at all, but despite my efforts I do have several horses in my herd who have it. I try not to refresh or re-roll their portrait after they age up if at all possible. So I don’t add tack or new tattoos. It helps keep them nice and colorful but an oopsy refresh turns them white.
  • @Silverstar- Wow, that’s really interesting. Thanks for letting me know! I’m personally not into breeding Appaloosas, but I have a few that I was curious about. (Including the one in my profile pic, who I think is quite nice.) I’m hoping they don’t go white on me too soon; I’d hate to loose their pretty coloring. I will remember not to refresh their image- ever :))
