Everyone plays the game their own way ; some want that High PT score , some want a certain color or white factor, some prefer ONLY Riding Horses or WB or Drafts , some like a mix.
The reason for buying horses is the same multiple choice of answers as the first response ; it all depends on what YOU want to do in the game.
And the third answer is again very similar ; are you lookig for odd or alien colors ? Then Nexus, Axiom or WrongWarp are choices. You dont HAVE to spend r/l money ; but if you want to there are several options every month to do so.

That first question all depends on how you want to play the game and what you want to breed for or even goals you have for different breeding lines.

For me personally, I rarely buy outside horses. I breed even generation horses and each generation must be superior to the previous (I use the testing provided in the game). I then only buy homozygous sooty horses without LP, Splash, Gray, Champagne or Silver. Most of the time I pick up a couple mares that will fit my lines that go into pasture.

I have one group of breeding horses that are uneven pedigrees but super high PT producers that I keep to breed a few high PT show horses.

The big money maker in the game is your show horses. Each show earns points and as their points go up, their daily payout increases giving you more money. I keep loads of show horses in my barn. My daily payout is 500k - that means every day 500,000hbs are added to my bank. This lets me breed all my horses, use AI breedinglab for more pretty foals, and GMT (gene mod treatment) custom foundation horses for new projects.

For me, I do think it is worth it to spend real money on the game. I buy gene licenses and have to expand my barns. I also have the premium upgrade. This game is a great relaxation for me outside of work and the barn, I have a ton of fun playing so the expense is worth it.
