How do you afford to make satins?
  • I feel like I must be missing something. I don't think anyone is spending hundreds of dollars on a game, but it takes 40 GM tokens to make a proper satin. I have found it fairly difficult to get many free GM tokens through luck from making sea ponies and purchasing them is quite expensive. Is there some kind of trick that I'm not aware of?
  • They buy the gene with real money.
  • A lot of players do spend hundreds of dollars on this game actually lol I am one of them that has done so in the past but nowadays I try to rely mostly on game currency. You just have to keep building your show herd and save money. It took MANY real life years for me to get my first foundation satin. You are sure to find many helpful and generous players who will help you get started by offering straws and eggs from their foundations for a cheaper price and they may even part with some of their 2nd or 3rd gen horses if you ask :) If I still had a pure satin line i would offer you something but my satin is tied in with my mushroom and chinchilla lines which I keep in house. But if i ever find any spares in my freezer I would be happy to send something your way :)

  • Um...*raises hands sheepishly*...I help support Ammit regularly. :D

  • I'm also a player that has over time spent thousands of real $ on the game. :D
You can also use game cash to buy IV's that you can then buy GMT's with.

  • Haha, well color me sheepish. I guess I just am more used to smaller purchases at a time.
  • The nice thing about doing larger purchases is the bonus GMTs that you get!
  • Like Hayes said build a huge show herd. I actually spent years playing the game without spending anything and have only recently started spending RL$ on the game. It takes a long time to build up a show herd large enough to allow you to GMT as much as you want; this is a long term game not quick satisfaction. At least long term if you don’t want to spend real $$.

But buying straws would be your best bet until you can afford your own. I’m currently doing a sale on my satin straws if you’d like to take a look at them. And I may have a 2g boy laying around somewhere, if not I’ll probably get an extra when I finally get around to breeding.

  • Yeah I was one of those big spenders up until covid started.... I'm talking well into 4 digits @-)
But almost 3 years into the game, money well spent! Lol

Now that my money spending habits have been put on the back burner, I've been forced to focus on my show herd to build the funds to mod my ponies that I can with in game money

  • If you're unable or unwilling to spend real money, generally the answer is a combination of generosity and patience.

Satin's not a restricted gene, so I've bought many lined horses from other players with it, even homozygous ones. If you don't have a ton of game money to spare, a lot of times people will sell or give away straws or excess foals.

As for consistently getting hom satin horses in your lines, other than buying two copies for several horses (one stallion and at least a few mares), it just takes some time. Time to get game money to spend on other players' stock, and time to get all the het satins to produce the foals you need. I'm really just now getting 4-6 homozygous foals per season, and I've loved satin since I started playing in December 2019. Honestly HAJ is kind of a patience game! Some things, like building a show herd, just take a while.

TL;DR Check sales boards and auctions, spend money when you can, and keep at it!
  • @steelmagghia I sent you some hom satin straws from a couple of my foundation studs :)
  • Awww,@Jessj you are so sweet, thank you!

Actually, it's kind of neat to see people managing to do this so many different ways. Very intriguing!
  • @steelmagghia I messaged you! Check your inbox! :)

  • I have some straws to my foundation satin boys if you'd like some. It took me years to get Moon is Down and he was made homozygous satin by some very generous players.

  • Yeah straws is how I'm going to do it get straws from two stallions (A and B) breed as many passing as you can until you get a colt from each then breed Colt A to all the B mares and Colt B to all the A mares get a 2g mare or two that's at least het sa to up your chances and with luck you have clean 3g hom satins just make sure the straws are foundies. Glittering beacon is a great choice.

  • As people have mentioned there are three main ways to do so.. 1) spend the rl money.. many of us do spend hundreds of dollars.. at least when we can afford it lol. 2) save it through ivs. show ponies are your best friend.. mine bring in 5.5 million per day (I have a pixel pony hoarding problem from over a decade of playing) so the 40gmts for satin isn't an issue. 3) focus on lined stock. Buy straws/eggs.. watch the sales pages and auctions
Licenses for everything. I have a pixel pony hoarding problem.

  • The price for genes via the lab is always more than what they cost to just buy with cash. 40 GMTs in the lab does not mean you are spending hundreds to buy it

  • Well at the very least this question has shown me that: 1) people are really awesome and kind, 2) you all have some absolutely beautiful horses, 3) you're all great at sharing your understanding and knowledge and 4) I still have a lot to learn about how things work!

Thank you all so much for your answers and offers. It will take me a bit to respond to everyone as I have physical therapy today and there's so much information (I wasn't expecting such a big response to my question!) that it takes a bit to understand what everyone is saying through the brain fog. But thank you all so, so much for your wonderful response!

@Ammit I did want to respond to you directly and make sure you knew this wasn't a complaint. I was just surprised when I thought I was going to make my own foundation horse with satin to start that line for myself and it was definitely more than I expected given how many satins are in the game. So I really was wondering how everyone was doing it as I knew there must be a way I wasn't thinking of.
  • I did not read it as a complaint at all so no worries. :D I just wanted to clarify since you seem confused about what people are actually spending on what. The price in the GMT lab is not the same as the cash price. :) GMT lab is a money sync. Its job is to bleed excess cash out of the game to keep the economy strong. It's a late-game item.

  • Haha, I can see that! I think that was why I was so confused. Everything else seems so reasonably priced, so the much higher expense of the GMT and lab items was surprising. But it makes sense as a late add/economy equalizer rather than as a main feature.
  • I have some lined satins I can pull from or sell, so feel free to take a look through my barns if you'd like :) My sales horses are here: https://www.huntandjump.com/adv_search.php?runsearch=go&name=$&owner=267069&53=1&128=0&129=0

  • Satin is my favorite gene on the game and what I base my breeding lines around. I have lots of lined satin horses, as far as foundations I have been very lucky to have some generous people place satin on some of my horses, and I have spent some real money to place it on others. Take a look through my barns and message me, if you’d like some eggs and straws id love help get you jump started in the satin world!
  • I also have some 2g Satin Studs ; so let me know if i can help as well :)

  • Oh sweet friends, your kindness has completely overwhelmed me! I cannot possibly take everyone up on all of these offers as I would be completely overflowing with straws and studs. But thank you so much for all of your offers to help in response to my ignorance. This community is truly the kindest, most wonderful community I have come across in a long time and it really warms my heart.
