Help Finding a Bootstrapping Stallion
-
Hello everyone,
This is my first started thread. I've been reading up on bootstrapping but I am having trouble finding a stallion to use from the market. If anyone can help by linking a stallions here, I would be very appreciative. I prefer drafts but will take warmbloods. Price can be up to 50k.
Also, when I breed a stallion to a mare, what is the first test I should do? I've been doing Breeding Advice, b/c it is free. Then if they say it would be a better show horse, spaying/gelding it. Is this correct? From there, should I get rid of horses under 10/10.5? For breeding mares, should I cull yellow?
Apologies for all of the questions. I've read over multiple forum posts, the Q&A, etc. but I think it is all too overwhelming. Having trouble on where to start.
Thank you!Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056 -
For bootstrapping, I can't help with a stud on this server (my BS herds are on Forest), but I can sorta answer questions!
When you're bootstrapping, the goal is to get a really high quality stud, breed him to whatever mares you have available, and improve your whole stock from there. You'd usually run Breeding Advice on the colts and skip BA on your fillies - when I started bootstrapping, I kept any Blue-papered fillies intact (even though they absolutely would have failed BA), and bred them back to my Star stud. Once you get a generation or two into that, you'll probably mostly have Gold fillies. Meanwhile, all the colts that fail BA will probably be solid show-babies: toss 'em in a barn to earn their oats.
Personally, I ignore PT for the most part, since it's not 1:1 showing:breeding ability (horse A can be a better breeder than horse B, but have a lower PT score). I comp-test my studs, sell or snip any that're worse than their sire & most of the AGAs, until I get a Superior son, then everyone else gets sold/snipped.
For the mares, once it's all Golds, I usually will look at their foals' paper-levels & PT scores as a basis for culling, because comp-testing all the mares would get expensive (and also time-consuming) - it's not a 100% method, but it more or less works. (For example, if Jane the Mare had two A-papered colts, a Star, a Blue filly, and two Golds... but Annie the Mare had two Star colts, a Blue filly, and three Golds, I'd keep Annie over Jane.) I do also go back and run BA on my previous-best stud's fillies when I have a new "best" stud. Some players keep an eye on how many of their colts are passing BA & start running BA on their fillies when it reaches a ratio they're OK with. It's all kinda personal preference!
Bootstrapping has a lot going on & can definitely be confusing and overwhelming at first. Feel free to message me if you have more questions! (I'm not great about checking the forum >.> ...but I am happy to help if I can!)Post edited by Vella at 2021-06-19 17:23:07ID 252818 | Breeding for TE livers, with satin hopefully -
Oh, on finding a stallion (duh moment, sorry). Here's a link to the studs currently listed for tomorrow's auction, sorted by Paper level - there are a few Stars in there, so if one of them suits your needs it might be a good starting place!

There are some up for regular sale, too, for varying prices - I think I saw everywhere from 5k to over 50k, so if you don't love the ones in the auction, that's worth checking too!ID 252818 | Breeding for TE livers, with satin hopefully -

Thanks for the in=depth explanation Vella. It is very helpful. I'm going to try my hand at the auction and see how that goes. I've been SBA every foal which was kind of a bad idea b/c a lot have been auto-spayed/gelded so I'll probably play around with not doing that for a couple of generations.
Thanks, Nikkel. I'll have a look!
