Bootstrapping Stallion without SBA testing
  • Hi there,

Is it ok to bootstrap with a stud that is not SBA tested? Or will that impact the lines negatively if say, he would have failed?

    Thanks for any info!

  • Honestly a lot of of the extremely high bootstrap stallions have had no BA or SBA testing done. The few who have had it done are the minority.

Bootstrapping is breeding a high papered/PT’d stallion or mare to another horse of lower quality with the goal of getting higher quality foals faster. But that type of breeding makes it very difficult for the foals to pass BA and almost impossible to pass SBA.

The only time the stallion or mare’s quality will/would impact your lines negatively are if they are less than what their parents are. So if you breed a Star stallion to a Red papered mare and get a yellow filly. That filly is taking your breeding line backwards. I am at a different place in my lines, but I have foals that paper Gold but test worse than their mother. Those daughters despite papering as well as their mom are not going to help my lines progress. That is why I comparison test all of my horses. But I have a massive show barn that pays for that testing, you wont have to worry about it until all of your bootstrap mares are Gold.

    I hope that helps. :)

  • Thanks, I appreciate that write-up. So, bootstrapping is really only useful for getting show horses then w/high PT? If I wanted to start a pure line (for color, PT, height, etc.) then the better way would be to go slower, starting with foundation horses?

  • Correct. But on a side note the best show horses seem to have a PT between 10.5-12 at least in my personal experience. The higher PT horses while having the potential to earn massive amounts of points are not my main money earners.

If you want a pure line the only way would be to go slower. You could purchase other players even generation stock, so you wouldn’t necessarily have to start at foundation level, but based on my own experience just starting your own line is usually easier than trying to find specific horses.
