The Ultimate Decision (Mares vs. Stallions)
-
I've always been partial to GMTing stallions just because you have the potential of more offspring. But I've also done a fair share of mares because every studs needs a matching mare right :))
How do you decide what to GMT as far as mare vs. stallion? Please share, I'm on the verge of starting another project but can't even decide what gender to make the end result!Post edited by kgstable at 2021-07-31 18:20:13 -
I try to only have 1 or 2 foundation stallions at a time. I had 5 at one point and I couldn't handle it. My boys get the main things that I want my lines to look like and I only do one of them about every real-life year. So my main GMT projects are my mares. I have 7 GMT’d mares with an 8th in the works. I guess I mentally model my barn off of how I would run any breeding program in RL, so it shapes a lot of what I do unintentionally.

@Silverstar That's what I've been leaning towards lately, I have 4 studs right now, one I might possibly loose at rollover but I don't think I'll replace him just because that is a lot of studs that don't get used.
I have one stud for my Splash M line, one for my KP line and one for my Inkspot/phantom lines. And my mares are usually a bit more over the top like these girls:
r Coco Cream
r Strawberry Milkshake
r Tropical Punch
I usually do big GMT stud once a year (and then when needed will replace my Splash M guy) and a mare every 2-3 months if I can afford it

I always GMT stallions. Very rarely mares. My reasoning? Stallions can sire up to 50 foals, while mares can have only one foal per year. So I get far more value GMTing stallions. I have 9 foundation stallions that I keep on a rotation roster. One year 3 boys get used. The 2nd year, the second set of 3 gets used. The third year, the last set of boys get used. Fourth year, the 1st set of boys get used again and so on.

My GMT studs are my go to but I have so much fun with the mares.
I love to use outside straws on my GMTd mares and hope they produce some good colts. These colts are homozygous for the fantasy genes or KP/Satin or Mushroom etc that I want in the line. I can then use those colts to cross on all the 2nd gen mares sired by my studs for a good mix of lines.
I have more GMTd mares then studs.Post edited by Humboldt at 2021-08-01 18:20:35 -
I'm really leaning towards making my next project a stud, my WrongWarp stud aged out over rollover and my KP stud is getting up in age so I'd like to merge the two together and use one stud for both lines! Thanks everyone for the responses, I love seeing how everyone else goes about doing things like this

I always prefer mares over stallions. Typically I will have one GMT'd stud and a minimum of four matching mares with some slight variation depending on the line goals. I mostly do this because I don't want to wait for third generation possible homozygous foals lol. So impatience. :))
And partly because GMT'd stallions are a dime a dozen, so my flashy mares can have their pick of the litter. ;)I breed Drafts and star horses :D

I like my stallions LOADED, so I need lots of funds to make a stallion. Buuut, I really prefer mares, because you can always find straws from amazing boys, but eggs are harder to get by.ID 195859

I have to do boys, because not too many people seem to breed for heavy bone. Riding horse/pony type seems to be really popular which I can understand why. If I want outside blood it's just easier for me to get straws so I can cross them with my foundation mares that have either DP or appaloosa or both, since I require all my lined breeding stock to have DP and appaloosa at the absolute minimum. If I get warmbloods from those resulting crosses, that's ok, I can breed more bone in.

I realized I had too many GMT project stallions, so now I have several mares too to even it out haha.ID is 267069 / she/they/he

@stardust that was my main problem :))
@Alianne that's why I do it too! I prefer studs, but I HAVE to have a mare to match because waiting until Hom 3rd gen studs is just TOO much workLicenses: Watercolor, Nacre, Splash M, Wrong Warp, Phantom Autumn/Lace/Diamond Sparkle/Web/Hearts/Shamrock/Muddy Puddles/Roses/Critter Tracks/Jellyfish/Birdtracks, Paintbrush Cool, Paintbrush Prism, Plaid, Shatterglass, Inkspot, Toner, Mushroom, DFP2, Onyx, Platinum, Ice 6, Ice 17Thanked by 1Alianne -
Personally, while I do like having hom genes here and there, I don't like having too much hom because then it makes things too boring and far less random on foals. I like rolling the dice on what I get, gene wise.
-
@Forestshadow That's actually why I'm in the process of re-starting my breeding program. I realized I had fallen so far into breeding for one color (which is fun and all but like you said, boring) so I'm adding more appaloosa, bay, and pearl into my lines! I've also decided to mix my KP and rainbow riot lines because it just sounds fun!
I had strictly been breeding for DP livers/Chocolates but it got so boring so I'm welcoming DP bays and Grullos into my lines along with more white genes! -
I breed for DPs myself, but I'm not picky about the base color as long as the horse is DP and has appy. The more genes, the merrier.
And since we were talking about hom genes, the only generation where I DO like having homo genes is at the foundation level on my boys, but I start rolling the dice at 2nd gen and higher.
If I get hom genes at higher generations, that's a bonus, but not required.Post edited by Forestshadow at 2021-08-03 10:01:44Thanked by 1kgstable -
I personally always start with a stallion because like you said, there is the potential for so many more foals. Plus I sort of enjoy the suspense of waiting until 3rd gen for all of the fancy genes to become homogenous. It also lets me choose slightly different mares so that I can get some variation in the less fancy genes, say have some with Lp, some Roan, some with White, etc.
Good luck with your re-start project, @kgstable - KP with rainbow riot sounds like it will turn out pretty cool! And I know what you mean, I started out with DP chestnuts and then got bored and started adding in bay and palomino too.ID #265959 | He/him | Breeding Black Satin, Liver, and Grullo Arcturus Horses | Licenses: Mushroom, DFP2, Onyx, Axiom Blue and Green
