  • ...you may be a little rusty, but you never forget how to do it! :D

Already got a Basic upgrade and will probably go to Premium when I get paid next week! Redesigned my default tattoo and tacked everyone up accordingly. See the profile picture too? My forum signature is still in the works but I'm sure that will be making an appearance before long!

All that being said, I have some rather silly questions I'm gonna ask. Feel free to answer or ignore!

-I've seen the term "bootstrapping" in heavy use as I peruse the forums. That wasn't a thing back in Ye Olden Days! What terms do you think my little peanut brain should learn/relearn in relation to playing the game now?

-I'm a proponent of even breeding up until a horse is what I call "fully lined", or when their pedigree tab is filled up (typically 4G). Once a horse is fully lined, to me, it didn't matter if I was crossing a 5G mare to a 17G stud as they're both "fully lined" and the pedigree tab will look even despite the generational discrepancy. (This is an exaggerated example but I'm sure y'all get the point) Now I'm seeing people tracking horses through 6G and I think I even saw one labeled 8G. Now that the "See Full Pedigree" feature is a thing, how far back do people now usually keep track in regards to even lines?

-Breeding seasons used to be bimonthly where the general cycle would have one month be an active breeding season then you would have your "off season" where we weren't able to breed but people would take time to compare, cull, and plan what outside straws/eggs/embryos they would need for the next rollover, even to the point where many would (or at the very least I did) have extensive excel spreadsheets about who was getting bred to whom. Now that rollover is a monthly occurrence, how meticulously do you work out your breeding plans for the upcoming season?

-Is the leaderboard as influential as it once? Does it even still exist?!

-Now the silliest question of them all: my absolute favorite coat pattern at one time was Homozygous Splash Frame with minimal or light WF because, if you got lucky, your horse would have a belly spot that I was convinced looked like a chubby Godzilla. It always made me smile when I saw it because I thought it was so adorable. I don't know if many people agreed with my interpretation of that coat but I held firm and still do! With all the new pattern variations, I have been unlucky in finding Godzilla again. This may be an Ammit question but does anyone know if that particular pattern is still achievable? I've seen so many that have been close but no cigar.

Thanks for reading my ramblings! I'll leave y'all to a splendiferous [insert your local time of day here]!

  • Hi! I've been around a couple years (not as long as a lot of these players though!), maybe I can answer a few questions! :)
    1. A few genes have been abbreviated, like the paintbrush genes (Warm, cool, prism) are usually abbreviated to PBW/PBC/PBP, there's also a few new genes like Sno and Sun, Halo, Height Regulator, Shatterglass, and Phantom Genes. I'd look up (I'm not well versed so I can't say much about them!). I'd get up to date on all the cool new genes

    2. I've only bred to 4G, so I can't say much. But when I've seen is people usually keep track up to 6G, or maybe that's just the most common place people are in breeding. Personally after 4G I just mix it up too! But that came be harder when you are breeding for quality just because of how generational quality works

    3. I usually breed at the beginning of the month and then go through my foals throughout the month to help spread out spending. I don't have a large barn so it might be different for those with 100+ horses

    4. Leaderboard is still around, however I don't see much about it. Maybe it's not a big thing anymore, but I do know it's still used.

    5. I think there still is a Hom Splash Frame herd helper out there that's possible, it might be something you have to re-roll your horses portrait a million times but with all of the work Ammit and the team have done as far as image generators the possibility of markings is limitless!! It's truly amazing!

I'm glad you've come back to the game! If you ever need anything don't be scared to send a PM! :)

  • The thing I see new peopIe having the most difficulties with would the abbreviations. Most herd helpers are abbreviated; Expro, Exper, ExShow, as examples. Genes are also abbreviated. Sometimes in such ways that can make them difficult to understand if you haven't seen that specific one a lot.

I'm only into Sixth gen myself, so I can't answer how far I'd be willing to keep track of my generations.
  • There’s a place on the FAQ that explains some terms (under helpful hints, I’m not sure this link will work. Edit to say the link does work you just have to scroll down a tiny bit.) https://www.huntandjump.com/faq.php#869

As for breeding plans personally I don’t plan anything aside from a few special crosses. I think theres a couple of stallions that have certain girlfriends who get bred before anyone else does. (Mainly so they don’t get accidentally bred to the wrong husband) I breed my pastures when I know I’ll have time to sort all the foals.

I don’t think the leaderboards matter as much as they did back in the day but many players including myself like to see our names up there!

Here’s my splash frame boy. I’m not sure if he’s Godzilla splash frame or not but he does have a son with a squid on his belly!

  • I like to micro manage my herd but I still have a very small stable with my 2Gs just coming of age now. Also all my prospective 2G studs have very specific roles so I have no trouble knowing who goes with whom.

  • First Question:

Bootstrapping is probably a major thing to be aware of - actually there was a whole discussion on what it referred to here https://www.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/50918/another-bootstrappng-discussion#Item_13.

I'd also agree that herd helpers and genes are often abbreviated. You can take a look at the full listing of herd helpers from the member homepage from the Account and Stable Management tab where it says "My Herd Helper Collection".

Not quite sure what you had when you were playing, but I think a lot of the Advanced Facility features that are available with the upgrades are new. Horses will often be listed "GMTable" meaning they have no offspring so Gene Modification Tokens (GMTs) can be used to alter their genes. Folks can also trade hbs for IVs in the Voucher Exchange for Boost tokens to improve breeding ability so "Boosting" is a common topic. People will also do lab breeding to create and implant embryos or clone.

The testing names have also changed (BA, SBA) and it is pretty common to comparison test and refer to horses as Sup (superior) or AGA (as good as) when selling or breeding them.

The only other thing I can think of is that the game now has Chimeras (used to be called Brindle) to represent horses with two sets of genes (this discussion explains it pretty well https://www.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/45290/how-does-chimera-work#Item_4 ). You can use GMTs in order to merge two horses together for the same result, with some particular rules for doing so with foundation horses as opposed to lined horses (I think the latter must be full siblings). I've never done it, but I think this can be quite useful when wanting to combine one horse with the genes you want to one that is a superior breeder as boosting tends to be more expensive.

I'd also be aware of the RGS (roving/regular gene sale) if you're interested in getting fantasy gene licenses. I think three genes go on sale each month, but the whole roster of genes has gone on sale during the Gift Exchanges the last couple times.

As a more fun anecdote, there is also a group who breed "Wreck it" horses after Wreck it Ralph, deliberately trying to get a low-PT horse that causes damages in the barn.

    Third Question:

With breeding every month, I think it partly depends on how fancy/expensive your horses are, how much time you have on your hands, and your method(s) of breeding. It is easier not to micromanage pasture breeding aside from grouping similar mares together and picking out the stallion(s). When doing lab breeding with straws, eggs, embryos, etc. I think more planning goes into it, potentially including doing spreadsheets. Same with breeding one horse to one horse.

I know that some stables stagger their pasture breeding so that they only breed part of their herd for a couple months and then switch it up. I personally breed my 1st gen horses in my pastures for two months and then switch to my 2nd and 3rd gen the next two months because I wouldn't have the time to sort through all of the foals otherwise. I'm sure that there are a ton of other ways to do it.

That's actually another good thing to be aware of - when pasture breeding if your pasture has mares and a stallion in it by the 15th of the month, it will automatically breed for you. So it is probably best practice to double check that all the right mares are in the right pastures before adding any stallions to pastures.

    Fourth Question:

I don't think that the Leaderboard is a big thing right now, probably with some people more focused on that as a goal than others. You can find it under the Community tab where it says "Breeding Clubs" if we're talking about the same thing.

  • @FallenFarms I sent you some straws from a couple of my non licensed studs :)
  • @Jessj thank you so much for the wonderful gift! I purchased 2 so that I can cross him with my two Candy Corn girls. I’m excited to see what they produce in September :D

@Blaze5115 They’re both so close! Your first guy looks like he’s actually giving a thumbs up (if you squint a little lol) and I love your squid son too because he absolutely does have a cephalopod on his belly!

Thank you everyone for the answers and advice and tips, I truly appreciate it! I guess if we want the bike analogy to continue, I’m transitioning from a penny farthing to a mountain bike. Same general concept but a lot of new techniques and habits to learn!

  • Here's a little more information about the change in the breeding season.

Quite a few real life years ago (2013, to be precise), Ammit started a second server originally called Hunt and Jump 2, now called Forest Server. It had one month game years. There were a few other differences, but this became the defining one. So many people signed up there, or primarily switched to the new server that Hunt and Jump 1 (now Bluegrass), nearly died off. In order to save it, Ammit changed it to 1 month game years as well, since the shorter "year" seemed to be the primary reason for the decline. Sure enough, HaJ1 took off again, and now the three versions (the new Mesa server was added not too long ago) are essentially the same, except for the number of players. Mesa is so new it hasn't caught up with the other two, I think.

When it comes to horse images, Ammit has switched to dynamically generated images, which entails much mathematical programming on her end, but the result is much wider variability in the appearance of horses, especially for the Kit variations (of which we now have a great many), the three splash versions, and appaloosas. If you go to the Search Horses page (found under the Community heading) and check out the Pigment Modifiers, White Markings, and Fantasy tabs, you can get an idea of the amazing complexity we have available to us.

Note: Splash 1, makes the smallest addition of white. Splash 2, on a different gene, adds more white and is homozygous lethal. Splash 3, which has the largest effect, is a different mutation of the gene that Splash 1 is located on, and is also homozygous lethal and lethal in combination with Splash 2. Splash M, if I'm remembering correctly appeared in one stallion, who was infertile as a part of the mutation. With no descendants, it was never passed on, in real life, but Ammit put it into the game without that serious genetic effect.

    Here's a horse with Splash M.

  • I was up to 7th generation even pedigreed before I decided to rework my lines some, I'm slowly getting back to 6th gen now.

Some people only do boosted lines, some people work with only foundation lines.
  • Odd frame expression doubt it's godzilla but figure I'd show it anyway

  • @nightphoenix Yeah but we've been trying to find a 'godzilla' expression for fallenfarms. :) The last point in the OP explains. So far there was a squid but no 'godzilla' yet.
