How to get better at earning money
  • Hey Folks,

Cash flow in this game is really slow. Should I be selling more of my horses?

I just got a pretty cool herd helper (Evergreen Boughs) but don't have enough to make one. I feel like I built out my herd pretty well, but still only earn about 700 a day. Should I really only be making 1 horse every couples days?

(to be clear, I am not begging for money! Just don't know how to do it myself :) )

  • Thanks for the links, Blu!! These are really helpful.
  • Glad they could help! Have fun.
  • In addition to what @bluchrystals has shared, I found this thread really helpful in developing my show string: https://www.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/48068/feels-like-i-will-never-get-ahead#Item_48

Your show herd is your money maker in this game and it's good to have 3 show horses to every 1 breeding horse. I've been following mostly what Silverstar does with their show herd except I cull anything that is leveled off and earning less than 10 points right now, since I'm still building my show string. It's been very helpful and I've grown my show income from about 40k to almost 75k in about three months.

I've also been picking up younger horses (around 3-5 years old) from the foundation rescue, spaying them, and letting them earn me money until they level off. If by the time they level off they're earning less than 10 points per year, they get auctioned. By this time, they usually have a fairly decent auction price and I use that as profit to get IVs.

  • @AIAsseelStables it doesn't look like you posted a link. And I'm not sure which conversation you are referring to. But I’m glad it's helped you. :)

This is advice I have given to other new players. I don't think it’s as in-depth as what AlAsseelStables is referring to, but I think it will help you now.

Long term you need show horses. If you look at any of the older players you will notice they all have one thing in common, massive show barns. The show horses pay for everything. The only thing with show horses is you’ll need lots of barn space, and it takes some time before they start paying for themselves and everything else you need and want in the game.

Short term there are two methods for new players, creating and selling pointed creates. Pointed Foundations/Creates are horses that are created with a random number of points. All other horses in the game have to earn points by showing, which is a longer process. The special thing about pointed creates is that only players who have less than 20,000 points total can make them. Us players who have been playing the game a while find those pointed creates highly valuable and will pay a good chunk for them which in turn helps new players get the $$ they need go get going.

Now certain Herd Helper creates are more valuable and desired than others. Perfect foundation, exceptionally perfect, super consistent, and exceptional show horses to name a few. Most players who are looking for pointed creates are looking at the amount of points they have, their total lifetime payout, and how much they are for sale for. Personally I prefer 1-2yr olds because I can have them for longer than older horses. Now what you should sell them for depends on a couple things. What is their daily payout, and how fast do you want to sell them? Now when I was able to make pointed creates I always wanted to sell them quickly so I’d put them up for 1/3 of their lifetime payout, others put them up for 1/2 their lifetime payout. It’s a matter of preference and figuring out what the market is for them.

(Side note) Points are important because they are what determine what your daily payout is. Daily payout is the best money maker of the game. Most players try to have 3 show horses to 1 breeder, and that ratio is pretty good.

The second is slightly more complicated. Create 4yr old mares throw them into your pasture without doing Any testing, create a stallion breed them then throw mares, foals and stallion in the auction without any testing besides BA. Fill all the open stalls you have by doing this wait for the auction, then repeat. I’ve used this method to buy several barns and that’s what I would recommend you do. You could also sell a few of the pointed mares for a low price 1/3 their payout, or even less, to free up some space so you can create and breed more horses for auction. Each foal that goes into the auction will make you 1,500 and if you auction the parents as well it won’t put you in the hole. But the most important thing is to not do any testing on any of the horses until you are putting them in auction and only do BA on them when you put them up; otherwise you won’t be making as much or anything doing this.

The short term methods should be used to buy a basic upgrade and barns, then I’d try to save a couple hundred thousand before you start working on whatever breeding line you want to focus on, and start building your show herd. The basic upgrade, barns, and nest egg will help you get started. The larger your nest egg the longer you can build your show herd before your show horses have to start paying for everything. At least that’s what I’d do, and have done in the past.

@bezzella feel free to ask me about anything unclear or that you would want more help with. :)
