New Hackney Pony Mare (white markings question)
-
We did a thing last night and I bought one of my dream horses.... Misty is my new 9 year old Hackney Pony mare! I've loved Hackney Ponies ever since I met Misty's namesake 20 years ago (my Misty looks almost exactly like the Misty I fell in love with all those years ago)
After we got her settled in last night, I noticed she has white markings going from her hindquarters all the way up her neck to her head but are more visible around her barrel.
I know Sab1 was bred into the Hackney Pony when the breed was first established but these markings don't scream Sab1 to me.... they also don't act as Rabicano and they don't look like Birdcatcher Spots (I've been around a lot of Rabicano and Birdcatcher Spotted horses working at the racetrack in my younger years and these spots don't behave like anything I can honestly pin point)
What's your alls opinion on them?
I'm going to try to get my husband to agree to let me eventually get her gene tested since he knows this is wracking my brain lol

Looks like roan to me, but I’m not sure. I know a horse who didn’t start to show roan until he was middle aged.I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!Thanked by 1Xzeina

I don't know enough about Hackneys to know if they have any Morgan influence.
We have different lines of Morgans with Splash and W20, and some that have high white on legs, white under their chin, roany hair, and belly markings that have yet to test for any of the known white genes. We do not currently have any actual Sabino1 tested horses in the Morgan breed.Thanked by 1Xzeina -
So I googled Hackey Pony colors and found this :
Colors
Hackney ponies may be black, bay (which includes brown), or chestnut. Bay is by far the most common color, but black is also relatively common. Chestnuts, on the other hand, are extremely rare; their color is usually particularly light, and chestnut ponies often possess flaxen manes and tails. Many hackneys also have some white markings. Due to the sabino gene, common in the breed, the Hackney Pony may have white markings on its body as well as on its legs and head. The sabino gene (possibly a gene complex), is generally unpredictable, so breeding solely for body white marks can be difficult.Thanked by 1Xzeina -
@Nightphoenix - I don't think it's sparse enough to be roan... any roan I've been around including my mother's former paint mare was single haired ticking, these are more small clumps throughout her body
@Humboldt - I do not believe the Hackney Pony has Morgan influence... from what I understand it was the Hackney Horse crossed with the Fell Pony with speculation of small amounts of Welsh influence
@Annismyrph - it could very well be Sabino but to me it doesn't really act like the low white factor Sabinos I've been around (when I was inadvertently near the Walker world... a long time ago, a lady I use to board with bred Walkers and most in her lines had Sabino genes)
To me, the way that some of them look (especially around her left hand side in front of her flank), almost looks like they are uniformed scars like the inutero brindling when the mare is sick while pregnant. Not an extreme case like the Dutch Warmblood named Josey, but this definitely has be scratching my head...
Maybe Ammit will eventually pop in with some of her wonderful, informed, knowledgePost edited by LEAcres at 2021-08-22 07:38:23Thanked by 1Xzeina -
Interesting. I know welsh ponies can have a spattering of white hairs throughout their body my breeder calls it “sparkles” not sure if it’s a legitimate term or just a regional name. They look similar to rabicano, however they aren’t necessarily congregated at the flank, they can be spread over the whole body, or one spot. My mare has gotten more as she has gotten older, but they are single hairs and quite spread out. It doesn’t look like your mare’s markings. To me it looks like a reverse of flea bitten gray, if that’s even possible.Thanked by 1Xzeina

I love hackney show ponies! I think her intresting coat pattern might be birdcatcher spots. It might not be birdcatcher because this is only on her belly and she has light dappling in her. Defintley not rabiacano. I am a horse color nerd because I love genetics and I also enjoy customizing model horses, big and small.ID # 273464
