DP - Visual Assessment
-
Hey friends,
Just wondering how you all are able to visually guess whether a horse has DP or not? I know the only way to test for sure is to test breed, but it seems like you can make a good guess based on just looks, what are your criteria? :)
Thanks! -
Also curious what the appeals of having a DP horse are, exactly?
-
The only appeal is just like any other gene - some people like way it impacts the way various colors look.
As to making a good guess and criteria - that depends on the other genetics involved. It does different things with sooty than without, and it does different things with palomino or champagne.
Many people have started using a dp tattoo. If you search all horses that have a tattoo named "dp", you're going to pull up quite a few. Looking through those will give you an idea of the range of looks it can have.
Then if you find anything you really like, you can figure out the other genetics required to get it. :)
