Sad Snip
  • So I bought a horse to breed to another specific horse and I got this colt, and all the tests that I did made it seem like he would pass, but then he didn't. He got A papered and 11.1. The only reason I can see that he would not have passed was, his mother had a score of 11.3. Here he is, my first really sad snip: image

Licensed for: Phantom Lace, Chinchilla, Mushroom,
  • Well he comes from a lot of A's and Blue's, so he could have easily gotten a lower A than his sire. That's a real bummer though!
Licensed for: Phantom Lace, Phantom Hearts, Phantom Skulls, Phantom DMSP, Apple Picking, Bouqet, Roses, Shamrock, Phantom Wisps, Chinchilla, ONYX, Splash M, Height Regulator, PBC, PBW, Watercolor, Axiom Green, Axiom Blue, Toner, and Mushroom
  • I would say that his sire is probably on the lower range of A papered since he papered higher than his parents. And I would bet his mom is high blue. Maybe just under Gold papered since her parents and grandparents are A/Blue and she tested superior to her dam. I would look for a different stallion to pair with that mare. While you could get a foal to pass BA or SBA, it may take a long time, and probably a 30 pasture bonus.

Side note PT doesn’t really affect breeding. The paper level is more important. I have had mare’s with a poor pt test as good as mare’s with a far superior pt, and that lower pt mare’s produced amazing foals.

  • After looking at his pedigree, I would say that the quality of his sire doesn't match the quality of his dam. His dam has the better papered pedigree, and you would need a stallion to match her, quality wise. Given the quality of his dam's pedigree, I would have expected him to paper Star.
  • @Forestshadow, is it not wise to breed B stallions to yellow mares, Red mares to C stallions, etc?

  • @Menstrosity ; most of my 2g mares are Red papered, ALL of my 2g studs are A papered ; I start with B/Red or yellow crosses
by 5th gen all of my studs are Star papered and my mares are mostly Blue some Gold

  • Ok, so it's fine to mix paper levels then? As long as they are the same generation?

  • If you leave your mares in pasture ( which I do ) they get that foal bump bonus ; I ve found it fine to cross 1 "grade" higher studs with mares ; crossing lower grade studs you get alot more snips for what ever reasons. usually out of a 100 acre pasture with mares 30+ days i get between 10 and 15 BA snips breeding this way

  • I use the same breeding practice as Annismyrph (starting with B/Red and C/Yellow). I will sometimes breed a B to a Yellow or vice versa. After the foundation generation though, it is always best to breed B to Red or A to Blue (or a high papered Red). That's how you get the higher quality foals.

That truly is a sad snip though. He is quite the looker.

  • I agree with Silverstars assessment, they could be different enough breeding quality.

But remember even matched quality horses will produce several foals that are not as good breeders but are still good show horses. It might take a few breedings to get a foal passed and sometimes you never get a superior breeding quality. There are mares that have never given me a superior foal just due to luck or lack of luck really.

  • And following with Annismyrph, my 2nd gen mares are either red or blue, but my studs are always A-papered. It works just fine in pasture and I get several foals passing.

  • I always start with Yellow/Red mares and C/B stallions as my foundation breeding stock. It's entirely possible to get an A or B from a Yellow/B cross or a Red/C cross. I have had several of those over the years.

For 2nd gen, I require Red fillies and to be superior to their dams. B colts minimum and to be superior to their sires.

3rd gen, I require superior Blue fillies and superior A colts.

4th, I require superior Blue fillies and superior A colts, although I do get the occasional Star/Gold at this generation.

5th and beyond I require Gold and Star, and they must be superior.
