Straw question about chimeras

  • I have a chimera that has all the good stuff on the bottom strand, and if I was to keep him as a stallion and pull straws from him, but I make the bottom strand 100% inheritance, would the straws keep that inheritance, or would they be 50/50?
  • The only chance you have to change inheritance is in the gmt lab.
  • Yes, but I'm talking about how inheritance would apply to straws pulled. Do inheritance stick, or does the straws revert to 50/50 when used?
  • The straw still has two sets of DNA. Therefore, there is still a 50/50 chance of inheriting either set of DNA. Straws can’t have different genetics than the stallion the straw was pulled from.
I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!
  • If you make his inherentance on the 2nd set of DNA, the foals will only get genes from that 2nd set of DNA. No different than setting the inherentance for one set or the other to 100% and using him for live cover
  • I'm fairly sure that when you change the inheritance chances to 100% for one set in the GMT lab that it applies to all methods of breeding, including straws. You are making it so that all gametes are produced from the specified DNA set, and the other set only effects the horse's somatic cells.

  • Thanks for all the replies, I'm still a bit confused, lol.
  • Basically ; if you set a Chimera at 100% for one set of DNA ; he will only throw that DNA , Like a regular stud would ; the "other" set of DNA is "for color only"
    Hope that helps :)

  • Oh ok, thanks for clearing that up.

I wound up deciding to geld that chimera because his top strand had all the genes I would have wanted except the missing sire line gene, and while his bottom strand had the missing gene, it was not as good as the top strand and would have required some GMT work before I would have been satisfied. Another thing to take into consideration for me was that only the top strand is cloneable even if I wasn't planning to clone. One never knows what they'll decide to do down the road.

So if I get another chimera where there's a big difference in genes between the strands, at least I'll know about how straws would work with inheritance set to 100%.
  • Whoops, I had no clue that you could make one set have 100% inheritance! ADHD moment :-\" But then what’s the point of the horse being a chimera of you’re not going to use one set of DNA…?

  • I know I've gotten a chimera that had really good genes but still needed some GMT work to fit my herd. It is cheaper to GMT inheritance and then only GMT one strand, especially if both start out similarly useful.

  • @Nightpheonix ; say I have a Pretzel Twist ; one set of DNA is Liver ; the other is Bay ; Since I dont breed for Bay... I could GMT him to only throw Liver ; BUT keep the patchy or stripey look

  • @NightPhoenix - if I'm not mistaken, using a chimera with 100% inheritance on one set still gives the foals a slight advantage of coming out chimeric themselves. I could be wrong though so dont quote me
  • Huh. I guess this is me just not understanding this because I breed for pretty much every gene except roan, haha! The 50/50 inheritance chance is what makes breeding chimeras fun for me. It keeps some variety so I won’t get bored.
