Genetics Gurus - How did I get a chestnut foal from 2 Blue Roans?
  • You can see his family on his page. How does this happen?

  • I'm no guru, but both of the roans are only Het Roan and each are only Het E, so he happened to inherit e from both and no roan. No E means no black and no R means no roan.

  • In simple terms. The red gene (e) is recessive to the black gene (E). For a horse to be red it must be ee. For a horse to be black, it can be EE or Ee/eE. Both of the foals parents were Ee/eE. This baby got both of the ee from the parents.

  • Each parent is only heterozygous (one copy) for E, so the foal inherited the e allele from each which produces no black pigment.

  • That cross has a 12.5% chance of the foal inheriting neither black or roan, so you just got lucky :)
I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!
  • Also, I remember the story of one guy who had a herd of stallions and mares running in a field and constantly breeding. When it was time to register the horses, he thought that all the black foals were by the black stallion, all the chestnut foals were by the chestnut stallion, all the bay foals were by the bay stallion, etc. As you can imagine that didn’t end well for him =))

Just because two horses are the same color doesn’t always mean that their foals will be the same color :)
