Should I Geld This Horse?
  • I was very excited to have this horse get to be old enough for breeding, but I am disappointed with the results. I got a decent amount of altered foals from him, and I am wondering if I should not breed him any more.

  • How many intact foals are you expecting? Majority altered foals is the normal and expected outcome.

  • I see you didnt paper him or the mares you bred him to ; to be honest ; you should ( I know its hard in the beginning to have the HB's to do all the tests ) if he papered the same as his sire , or worse , he should be gelded and become a show pony :). You want to improve your lines and the only way to really, really do that is test everything and only breed the "higher" papered horses :)

  • What @annismyrph said :)

Also, I would give him another chance next season. None of your mares have their full pasture bonus and that can make a big difference :)
I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!

  • Even my highest quality 2Gs throw a ton of foals who get altered. I can’t remember for sure now, but my original benchmark (the best of his gender & generation that I compared all my others to) only gave me a few intacts per season, especially on the beginning. I think I might have even gone whole seasons with no intacts or only one.

My other generations probably have even lower rates of passing foals, but breeding for passing (especially passing & papered up) 3Gs feels like the hardest. (Even if it isn’t)
  • It appears (to me) that most of your mares were 2G not foundation. With that said he has a fair amount of foals that stayed in tact.

Unevens (Foundation bred to generation horses) always have a higher degree of getting snipped.

In my opinion, and others may agree or disagree. looking at his track record I would keep him intact. I would breed him to slightly better mares or around the same and compare results.

Even my best studs throw intact and snipped foals
