Covid had hit our household
  • We are still unsure how exactly with only a few guesses where it came from. All three of my children including myself had tested positive last night. It's been 5 days of sickness in the house. My 6 and 9 year old are recovering quite quickly with little issues and I'm not to far off. What worries me is my 2yo who won't eat. Hasn't ate in 48 hours. We recently lost sense of smell and I'm thinking taste for her as she thinks everything is yucky. Over all with the congestion and scratchy voice she is still very active playing. Anyone have suggestions on how to get my picky toddler to get the nutrition she needs? She is drinking lots of fluids, Gatorades and juice but that's really all.
Of course the holidays are around the corner and we have to be quarantined till November 30th. I'm going without pay at work. We are holding tight though and focusing on the bright side of the picture.
  • @Brandybrookes ; when i had it i didnt want to eat for almost a month ; does she have favorite foods? try Chicken and stars/ noodles soup ; even if she cant taste it it will feel soothing drinking it, also beef and barley soups ( you can smash down the barley to make sure it is swollable with out chewing ). Those go ghurt things might have a ton of sugar in them but will also give her a calcuim boost, same with the Pedisure drinks. Even ice cream might work ; once her appetite gives in she ll make up for lost time !

  • I ate a lot of pb & honey sandwiches. My reasoning was why eat anything fancier or more complicated if it all tastes the same?? :D It's been almost a year, and I still don't have a full sense of taste back, I miss chocolate tasting like chocolate and not buttery wax. =((

I second @annismyrph, any sort of food that is basically drinkable will probably minimize the taste-yuckiness.

Hugs, I hope you all have a quick and easy recovery with minimal aftereffects.

  • Also, you can trying making homemade ice cream with bananas and mabe something like carrots to get some vitamins into her? If you boil carrots until soft and then blend and strain them into the bananas and freeze, the cold and soft feeling might be soothing, plus I've never met a kid who didn't take ice cream as a treat. You could also blend berries, carrots, spinach etc into juice and freeze into ice pops with lots of nutrients.

I haven't gotten covid (thankfully) so I'm not sure how the loss of taste would affect my interest in stuff like this. But if she's normally picky but likes "snack" foods, now if the time to get those sneaky veggies in while she can't taste them! Lol.

Ultimately, though, I remember my fjildren's doctors telling me at one point that when your kid is sick and refusing to eat, it's much more important for them to eat something, regardless of how healthy it is... you shouldn't be worrying as much about nutrients if it's going to cause a struggle. If that means ice cream and Mac & cheese for two days or whatever, at least they're eating.

Also the drinks like protein breakfast drinks might work out since it'll probably just feel like drinking milk?

Good luck to you and remember to take good care of yourself as well. Your kiddos need a healthy mama so even though instinct says to only worry about them, make sure you keep yourself going too.
  • Is there something she likes?

My oldest was on the border of being underweight (cause of meds). Dr wanted him to use pedisure. It was kinda pricey. I found carnation instant breakfast was fairly similar. Dr was okay with that so that is what we used.

My niece swears by nice cream when her kids are not feeling well. I don't remember all the details, but it involves mashed frozen bananas.

What about applesauce or yogurt. My kiddos like those when not feeling good.

I've heard of people freezing grapes and then eating them.
  • Popcycles come in handy at a time like this and jello is good too. Watermelon is another thing we use with our kids when they are not wanting to eat. Smoothies are another thing we use to coax the kids to eat when they aren't wanting to eat. I hope you are all feeling better soon
