How do you battle the flies?
-
I am looking for suggestions on new fly spray, either store brands or home made. Since we have all this rain there are not only a ton of flies but other flying pestering annoyances including mosquito. The pasture is in a flood plain and while in the past few years we haven't had as much as we do now, there is a ton of standing water in the pasture. I would like something that works all around. One of my Arabian geldings is extremely sensitive to flies, so much so that if I am out of fly spray I dont ride him. I did use Pyranha, but it just seems to work ok.

Assuming this is your own place, I'd start by placing some bat houses...see if you can get a bat population in your neighborhood. Nothing works on mosquitos like bats do. There's some instruction here (note the drop down menu labeled "Bat houses" has instruction on best placement)
http://www.batconservation.org/bat-houses/build-your-own-bat-house
And also here: http://www.batcon.org/resources/getting-involved/install-a-bat-house
You could also see if you can sign up as a place they could move a problem bat community to - like one that took up residence in someone's attic.
For flies, I prefer investing in fly predators. This is not a quick fix as they pray on eggs and larvae, but they will help reduce future generations as the summer progresses - if you keep up with the applications.
Paying mantis is another bug that's good to have around - you can buy a nest online or through garden stores, let it hatch out and let them start praying on everything that's smaller than they are. And I mean everything.
Side note: don't do mosquito zappers. They rarely actually kill mosquitos, but they do a number of mosquito hawks, which are huge scary looking things that actually eat mosquitos. People tend to confuse them with mosquitos and swat them. They are good bugs, but by dang they are ugly things: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=mosquito+hawk&id=CC698B5D819736C5B5D292AE841366EBAA97447B&FORM=IQFRBA -
Unfortunately, this is not my own place but we do have some of fly control methods at the barn going on. One of those is fly predators. We get those several times a year, from spring until we don't need them anymore. They have not had time yet to be effective since we spread em out recently but I do believe they help immensely in keeping the population down once they get going.
The mosquito hawk I have read is a myth and the adults don't actually eat anything while the larvae eat plant matter. While I like the bat idea, I don't think everyone else will. My own place is several years away but I may do a bat house because they eat so many insects.
I also like the mantis but they are able to migrate further and not be of use if they do where as the fly predators do not.
