Genetics question
  • Hello! I'm a little rusty on my horse genetics and am curious which gene is giving this horse his gray appearance (he was black before his image refresh and I actually thought he had a gray gene, was surprised to realize he didn't!) https://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=12460606

Is it the LP gene? Thanks for your help!
  • I am NOT the appy expert, but I would say that yes, it is LP. From what I've observed over the years LP does cause a 'grayed out' look as the horse ages.

  • Went to look at my other appys and found a few others have lightened as well (like this mare https://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=12448800 ) so that totally makes sense! Fascinating, thank you!!
  • Although Im not an appy expert either, I believe it is the halo aka varnish gene...

"Appaloosa varnish is a progressive silvering effect that leaves color (called varnish marks) on the bony prominences of the face, lower neck, forearm, knees, hips and stifle."

    Beautiful horse!

  • That’s called varnishing (different from the halo varnish regulator gene). It’s a hidden gene. Evergreen herd helper horses are guaranteed not to varnish as they age :)

The halo varnish regulator gene causes a second circle, or “halo”, around the leopard spots when combined with DP.

This boy is a chimera, but you can still see what I mean. See how some of the spots have another spot on top of or inside them? That’s the halo varnish regulator (H) gene :)

I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!
