What measures "best in pasture"?
-
I've only been using pastures for a few months, and hadn't really paid attention to the "best in pasture" feature until now.
I just bred my foundation pasture of ~45 mares, and PT'd the best in pasture foal and it's a 9.9. This pasture is about 40% ex perfect (10.4 PT), 40% ex producer (9.9 PT) and 20% something lower PT. Bred to an ex perfect 10.4 PT stallion. Most of these mares have been in the pasture 30+ days.
I don't have the money today to PT all the foals in the pasture, but I've done a few and already gotten a 10.8 and 10.6 that passed BA. I don't have the money to do breeding inspection on these today, so I suppose that could come into play.
So the "best in pasture" clearly isn't the foal with the highest PT. What is it a measure of? -
Breeding quality, which is one of the numbers we don't get to see! And, just because a foal might be best in pasture (or BOP), if NONE of the foals are better than their parent(s) they could still be altered.

And remember PT does not have an effect on breeding ability. Your Ex Pro and ExPerf mares have the same breeding ability.Thanked by 1Nightphoenix

Sometimes I get caught up with looking at the numbers in front of me and forget that that isn't always the clear indicator of a horse being of breeding quality. I don't know how many I have put to the side or spayed because they ended up having a lower PT than the parents. :-?? Now I pretty much keep anything that fits what I look for, especially if it was BOP.Thanked by 1Nightphoenix

I have a superior third generation blue papered mare with a PT of 9.9 and she is an excellent breeding horse :)I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!
