bootstrapping
-
I was told that pasture horses can make more $$ if they are bootstrapped. anyone knows what that means?
-
There is a way of breeding horses to speed up getting the increasingly higher PT scores that are one of the goals of breeding.
A player starts with a high generation number, high breeding paper level stallion and breeds him to a number of lower generation/lower breeding level mares. When any resulting fillies reach breeding age, the player breeds them to their sire. This practice continues, breeding the stallion to his female offspring.
This gives the offspring an advantage in showing. It may also give some advantage to breeding ability, as many of the fillies will be better breeders than their dams and will also likely be better for showing. The colts will also have a chance to be better at showing, though I doubt any of them will be better breeders than their sire.
I believe this works quite well for its purpose, for those who stick with it, but I have never used this system myself.
Perhaps someone who does bootstrapping regularly will chime in with better information.Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2022-03-01 09:47:12Thanked by 1OrionsStables -
wow! but better not do this with white horses, right?
-
You're correct. Those patterns would not work at all with bootstrapping.
I would definitely not use any white spotted horses or horses with Frame (O). It would also be a good idea not to use Splash 2 or Splash 3, which are also homozygous lethal and lethal in combination.
Splash 1, Tobiano, Roan, Sabino 1 and 2, and White 20 should not cause problems. -
My best Bootstrap stud is deceased. :(( He was always on a leaderboard somewhere

His two best colts are getting there though...probably would have been better if I hadn't forgotten to add their foals to the clubs this season! ;)

Those are gorgeous horses, bluchrystals. What a stunning line you've started.
-
they are pretty indeed!
-
I have never had an issue with the lethal crosses, but I have always kept a low white factor in my studs.
-
I have never once worried about lethal white, the only thing I sorta worry about is frame. I have one frame stud and he’s the only horse I lose foals from. Out of the roughly 600 foals I bred last year I lost two foals so really not bad.
I have a decent bootstrap herd. My bootstrap herd is my primary source of income. I have horses on the leaderboards each season. Aside from money it’s also one of my very favorite lines! I have loads of fun genes that I can mix around because I don’t have any real rules for the line.
If your interested in getting started bootstrapping I’d be happy to gift you a stallionPost edited by Blaze5115 at 2022-03-01 17:12:00 -
I also Bootstrap , and can give help if needed :)

This has been useful. I've dabbled a tiny bit in bootstrapping, but I haven't quite got the hang of it yet, myself. How high of a PT do y'all use for your bootstrap studs?
-
This was my OG Bootstrap :
ssLi Emerald Berries HPT
I am currently using a couple of his sons that passed BA ( I tossed some Gold papered mares in there to try to get a couple boys to pass )
This is one son I am using and 1 grandson :
LG Li Sage by Emerald 79
LG Li Burnt by Sage 66 -
Super cool! I just started using this boy last season:
BS3 STUD Matthew13 5 AGA
How many mares should I be breeding each season? Should I just start with foundies and breed back to the mares they produce? Can I take the mares from previous bootstrap studs and start breeding them to this higher pointed stud for the same effect, or do they have to be bred back to their own sire? -
I got insanely lucking when I started out and was able to snag two clones from Johara’s incredible lines.
These two are the founders of my line. And I am yet to find anything superior to them. They both throw 13 and 14pt foals despite having scores of 12.70 and 12.80.
2 High PT 11808214
1 High PT 11797936
Since those boys have aged out these two are my new primary studs. (I have others that I use but these ones get the best mares) Another one out of johara’s line and one from Twany’s

I say breed as many mares as you can sustain. For my bootstrap horses, last season I bred ball park 500 mares. I throw them into a pasture to save money and time, but I put them back into the show barn after they’re bred. I also sell over half of them in the auction breed them in the pasture for 500, sell at 2500 boom profit. I select all and SBA test and keep who ever passes (normally only a few pass) . I try to only keep about 100 foals from my two primary stallions.
When I first started out I bred my studs to foundation mares. I only got 35ish from each stallion at the time. I didn’t have the funds or space for any more. I bred to foundation mares for 6ish game years to build up my stock. Then started breeding back to daughters.
I’ve bred sires to daughters and bred the same mares to different stallions and I personally don’t see a difference. The end goal is a high pt score and as long as it’s climbing do what makes you happy.
Ive bought super flashy studs with genes I really liked (perfect example is aspirations up there) just to add something fun to my lines. It’s definitely more enjoyable when you like the horses your looking at
This is just what I do and I’m sure there’s tons of things I could do differently, but I hope this helped a little bit
