somatic tattoos?
-
what is a somatic tattoo?
I have seen all sorts of them including "wild" bay (is that different from a regular bay?), Nightingale, and some of the somatic tattoos seem to just be what the phenotype is?
thank you. -
Somatic tattoos are used to label horses and make them easier to sort and search for on the horse search page. Players can create any tattoos they like to make it easier to keep track of their horses. Usual tattoos are breeder/stable tattoos, generation tattoos, and tattoos for particular lines within a stable. (There was a good thread a while back on how to best use tattoos. I'll see if I can find it and post the link.) The tattoo registry is on your home page under the account and stable management section, but I think you need an upgrade for this feature. However, it sounds like the tattoos you are describing are all from herd helpers. When you create a horse with a herd helper, the horse automatically gets a somatic tattoo of the herd helper it came from. The same goes for special create events like Appy Hour (Friday at 4-5pm game time, I think) which all get heterozygous appaloosa tattoos, and other special events like Blackout, where all the horses come out black, regardless of herd helper.

I found the thread about what to track with tattoos! Since tattoo slots cost game money to create and it also costs to apply a tattoo to a horse, players try to be strategic about it and not create tattoos for things that can be easily searched for with existing search filters. There was also a recent discussion about using tattoos to label "best in pasture" foals since there's no other way to search for that unless you put some sort of abbreviation in the horse's name.
Anyway, here's the link:

Also, tattoos created by the player will show up on the horses image, with the exception of a lip tattoo, rather than just in the tattoo list on the horses main page, and foals, who can GET tattoos, but they don't show up until they turn 2.

so herd helper tattoos. they're invisible, right?
who would track them?
like my latest nighttime acquisition, a vault of stars?
what does that mean? is it just the latest cool shiny thing?
thank you all for your help -
You can find a description of all herd helpers on your Member Home page. Open the Account And Stable Management tab and go to the My Herd Helper Collection link. There you will find a list of all herd helpers currently in the game, with a description of what each one does. I frequently use this as a reference for herd helpers I'm not familiar with, that way I know what I'm getting when I purchase a horse with a herd helper somatic tattoo.
For example, here's what the list says(for me) under Vault of Stars:
Look to the night sky and see its vast vault of stars. All horses will be black with tobiano, white, splash, appaloosa and frame genes. They may also have additional rare genes.
1411 Vault of Stars horses in game, 0 owned by me
This herd helper triggers the following primary herd helpers
Heterozygous Black Homozygous Rec. Bay Homozygous Rec. Cream Homozygous Rec. Dun Homozygous Rec. Gray Homozygous Tobiano Heterozygous White 2 Heterozygous Frame Heterozygous Splash Heterozygous AppaloosaPost edited by MackZ at 2022-03-04 23:11:09 -
The thing about the herd helper tattoos is that, yes they are hidden, but you can find them in a search if you know the name of the herd helper. It is generally easier to use the link that MackZ mentioned, but if, for example, you wanted to see if there were any particular herd helpers in the Foundation Rescue, you should be able to do a search for Owner ID #13, and in the Tattoo box put the name of the herd helper you are looking for.
There are currently 9 "Vault Of Stars" horses for sale in the Foundation Rescue: https://www.huntandjump.com/adv_search.php?runsearch=go&jump=0&owner=13&tattoo=Vault+of+Stars&128=0&129=0Post edited by ConfluenceStable at 2022-03-05 09:59:33

ConfluenceStable, what is the Foundation rescue?
thank you! -
The Foundation Rescue sorts through all horses entered into the Public Auction and buys up all the Perfect Foundation horses that have not already been bid on by a human player. Perfect Foundations have a PT of 9.9, paper C if stallions or Yellow if mares, and are perfectly consistent, meaning they have the same score each time they are shown in a week.
Perfect Foundations make good horses for any stable, but especially if you are a new player, since they have a guaranteed quality for breeding and showing.
These horses are the best that ordinary creates can be.Thanked by 1Fiddler -
The public auction runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, so if you check Foundation Rescue on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, or Monday, you will likely find new horses there.
At this moment, there are over 5000 horses in the rescue. Some are plain, but others have interesting patterns.Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2022-03-05 14:49:17Thanked by 1Fiddler
