Questions about making my dream gmt stud
  • This probably won't happen for a while, but I'm planning out my dream gmt stud for my foundation mares. I'm nowhere near close to having this dream in my grasp, but I can't help being so excited! :) I'd love to offer straws from him when I do have chance to make this stud, and I have a few questions regarding what is desired in the community, not just for myself.

The first question is about the splash gene. I really like splash, but it's not something I'd absolutely want. I like SW1 and SW2, what are other's thoughts on that? Asking, because I want to know how it would go if I were to offer straws. If advised to keep splash out of the equation, I can get splash pretty easily from my foundation mares. Tbh I'm half and half on wanting to add any splash gene, and I need some help deciding.

Next I want to know with white spotting, I kill for SB2 with roan, but I'm also obsessed with W3 and the look it gives. My question is: Would it be better to play it safe with genes like roan and SB2, especially since I want to offer to the public?

Last question is kinda just for fun and doesn't have to be answered. Who has made their dream gmt stallion, and how has having you're own desired genes helped you better your lines and game experience?

I know everyone has their own thing going with what they like, and I can't appeal to the whole community. I want to do something for me and for others too.

  • We all have things we like and don't like. I hate all Splashes except Splash M and I love the White genes.

I love W3, its probably my 2nd favorite behind Kit M. I haven't found that anyone avoids them specifically as they are more safe than W1 and W2.

I always suggest KP or KP2 if you are adding Kit genes like roan or Sabino. The details are beautiful to me.

I create GMT studs with different genes and sizes to keep variety. I love crossing them all. This is my more recent dressed up boy. Lots of fun genes...

  • Well everyone certainly has different preferences! If I’m buying straws I usually don’t mind any white or splash genes because I tend to keep my mares fairly plain when it comes to the risky genes. I do quite like splash and roan and have a lot of w8 in my herd.

For what it’s worth, for a first major GMT project, I’d definitely say go with what you like above all else. Way more fun to experiment that way and it can be hard to predict what others like. Some people only breed for certain bone weights or heights, regardless of genes. Sometimes I’ll see a cool project and buy straws I would have never thought would work with my goals.

My first GMT stallion is no longer around, but I recently made this guy, who I’m rather happy with!

I think it’s a lot of fun working on a dedicated line with a new stallion, especially since you get to be pretty selective with your foals and get to see how your line develops over time.

    Good luck with your project!

  • I think the biggest thing if you want to share to as many people as possible is to avoid licensed genes. But definitely as others have said do what you like first of all. Having your own distinct look you enjoy makes breeding a lot more fun.

  • I would definitely look through the FAQ User Guide..

There is a White Factor chart in there that tells you what is safe to cross and what is not.
As far as splash goes, I think there is one splash gene that is unsafe/lethal in Homozygous form (someone correct me if I am wrong.)

While most of my lines contain licensed genes, I don't normally offer my horses, straws or eggs up for public sale..

As for dream stallions, my lines first started with
Black with KP (I eventually nixed this project)

Then it went to Homozygous DP Liver Chestnuts with Sab2, Flaxen and Pangare..
Now they are Homozygous DP Liver Chestnut/AA Agouti Bay with Mushroom, Kit M, KP2 and Satin while trying to breed in DFP2

    THEN (2019):

    NOW :

And eventually went to Silver Black Chinchilla with Sab2 and has manifested into Silver Smokey Creme Chinchilla with KitM and Satin with trying to cross in DFP2.

  • I started with BlueRoan Appies ; then added Livers because I love the look of HOM Dp KitM and "Black Livers" , I added BlueRoan Tobianos because I wanted PhantomDiamondSparkle and that doesnt show on Appies. So 3 completely different lines because thats what I like. I rarely sell anything other than 2g intact in the auction. Occasionally I ll sell during Gift Exchange.

  • Thank you everyone, I really appreciate this! All your gmt projects have given me some inspiration. I'm hoping to do something that's loved, but still not as common. Originally I was going to do liver since I'm kinda obsessed with any red horse or red animal, and the dark variations make me happy everytime I see a new foal. I want to try something else I've always liked as well. I feel it'll add some variety to what I've got already.
