What is a bootstrap foal?
  • On the sales forum I have seen foals labeled as “bootstrap foals”. What exactly does that mean? I originally thinking that it was a foal with an uneven pedigree, but judging by the foals I’ve recently seen for sale bearing this label I’m left to believe that I’ve been incorrect in my assumptions.

  • All bootstrapped foals are unevenly bred, but not all unevenly bred foals are bootstrapped. Bootstrapping is a process of breeding a high PT stallion to foundation mares to quickly produce high PT show horses without waiting the time it takes to breed to that level evenly. Here's a recent thread on bootstrapping with more info:

  • I sometimes put AGA foals from my even lines in my bootstrap pasture if they have a color I like, so occasionally I have it work out where a foal labeled bootstrap is actually evenly bred. Also sometimes for higher gens you won't see the uneven generations unless you pull up the whole pedigree. I started out using foundation mares, but it's evolved to include pretty much any mares I like that don't work for my other breeding lines lol. It may not be pure bootstrapping but it's fun anyway
