I had a stud who has been archived. I still have some straws from him, can I still use them? It doesn't seem to want to let me.

If you have the straw you can use the straw; I believe if they are expired they disappear from your inventory. Are you certain you haven't bred that mare already this season?

They were to be gifts. So I don't know what mare. I haven't started using my straws yet.

OK so then what do you mean by "it doesn't seem to want to let me"?
If you aren't using them what is it not letting you do?

I think the problem was because I tried to sell them for 0, once I changed that to 1, i was able to do it

oh, I was trying to gift them, and it didn't work.
