understanding points in showing
-
Every placing except last place earns points. The number of points will vary by the level of the class (local, regional, national, world - level 1-7) and the number of entries. The points earned are calculated into your 'nightly' showing bonus.
Think of it like this (this example is super simplified): Every time you train your horse it gets 'training points'. When a horse enters a show class the points are compared to all the other horses in the class. There ARE other criteria, such as consistency and some mystery calculations that Ammit has added in, and those are all added up to see which horse 'wins' the class, and gets the points for that placing/level.
The amount of winnings per place is set for the different levels and placings. Neither that, nor the entry fees will change.
SO: Your 16 year old Yogi horse has probably reached a point where he has 'levelled off'. That means his training is basically complete and he just earns a tiny bit with every training session. (It is still worth training them but it won't be near as helpful as it was earlier in his life.) He has levelled off at a not so great spot; he's placing 10 out of 17 in his classes. He's not going to earn enough new points to move him up the placings very quickly. You may want to consider his value to your barn.
Your 3 year old Riptide colt is still young, earning as much as an intact horse can get from each training session, and will continue to do so until he reaches an age somewhere around his PT score (that's when they start to level off).
Spaying/gelding horses before they level off will give an extra boost to those 'training scores', and once they level off they will still have just tiny increases to their scores, but it will be a bit more than an intact horse in the same position would earn.
Let me know if this helps!Post edited by ConfluenceStable at 2022-03-20 10:27:18

yes, what you said does help immensely. slowly the clouds are parting.
I still don't understand, however, how those points turn into hbs. I will neuter those boys, based on what you said because neither is actually contributing to my program :D. I was afraid to. -
The points don't directly turn into hbs. The more points a horse has, the higher their daily earning is (on their main page, around where it says their points). From what I understand, they earn no hbs from showing.Thanked by 1Fiddler

There are a couple of posts here that might help:https://www.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/31645/basic-information-for-new-players#Item_21

Cool, Fiddler, everyone figures things out differently, if you get an explanation that you can't figure out, don't stop asking! Way back in the beginning it took me FOREVER to figure out the difference between 'barns' and 'accounts'...I had to ask over and over before I got it right!
