So I recently sold my 2nd BLM Mustang. For no particular reason other then the market was high and I never planned not wanted to keep him long term. I did get a pretty hefty chunk of change off him.
I’m a junior in high school and will be going into my senior year next year. Afterwards college.
I had planned on not getting another horse let alone another mustang after him. I have two other riding horses and they’re both completely finished and incredibly broke.
I’ve also been riding this absolutely beautiful grey horse getting him more broke for my friend
I’m torn between
getting another mustang. I adore the process of gentling them. I absolutely love watching them go from “wild to willing”
Or as my mom suggested, I’ll be leaving for college in the year or so I continue riding the grey horse for my friend. Because I can do everything I want to do with this horse (bonus is not mine and I don’t have to pay to feed it or take care of it)
I’m struggling I think because I’d love to gentle another mustang however I know it’s definitely not the most logical option on the table. The grey horse has lots of potential and as I said above I can do everything I want to do with him. Downside is it’s not my horse and I’m not being payed to spend my time on it.
Another struggle I’m debating in my mind is this may be one of the last chance in my life I get for a really long time (between college and having to be an adult) that I’ll have the opportunity to gentle another mustang. If I did go the mustang route it more then likely would not be a horse I keep forever. I’d almost definitely train it and sell it when I do go to college
I could definitely use outside opinions! Thank you so much -
4 years is not a "really long time" I think you have plenty of years ahead of you to get another mustang to gentle.
I had the good fortune of being able to gentle a few horses (not totally wild like a mustang but... enough for a great experience.)
OTOH, it sounds like you have a place for a horse (you said you owned two riding horses) how far from college is this? And if you already broke a mustang, you probably have the facilities. You're miles ahead of most people. If college isn't too far away, you're still going to want to play with your horses.

I currently live roughly 3 hours away from home, and when I am living at home over the summer I work as a stablehand.
While I can make a day trip, I prefer not to as the highways can be extremely dangerous in my area. I like it because I'm close enough to go home if needed, but far enough away that I've been able to grow without fear of judgement from my siblings.
My advice is this:
1) figure out what you want to go to college for, and find the college that best fits that. If distance from home is an important factor to you, have that be your second biggest factor and let the quality of education be the first.
2) Have you tried talking the issue over with a therapist, or trusted friend?
3) Talk to your parent(s) about trying college for a year, or even only one semester, and deciding after that.
4) I don't really advise to do this, but it is an option: college for schooltime and gentling another mustang over the summer.
Not sure I helped at all, lol, but I hope I at least gave you an idea about the different options there are. -
I know when I was a senior in high school I would not have had time for this. It is a big transition and life change that takes a lot of energy. Also, there will be so much time for breaking horses after college.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

I plan on going for chiropractics which is about 8 years of school.
My first 4 years will most likely be done within 40 minutes of home
And the other 4 years will be either 5 or 9 hours (depending where I go haha)
I decided I should probably wait on a new horse for now. I have the other two I mentioned that I’d much rather invest in. And those two aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
You’ve all made good points! ThanksPost edited by Blaze5115 at 2022-04-13 08:48:10 -
good luck!

I'm sorta in a same situation except the horses I'm working with aren't wild, they're my yearlings. They've had handling since birth and even then I know it will still be hard. I want to keep 2 who are the best minded foals I've worked with, but I'm aware that I'll have 0 time for them when I go to college, so sadly I'll let them go for the right price. Idk what you'll be going for in college, but my advice is it's better to wait so you don't have more weight on your shoulders allowing you to concentrate more on your schooling, and relax if possible when you aren't busy. Sounds like you enjoy what you do with your mustangs, so you don't want that work to start feeling like a chore when you're under more stress than usual.

Spending money on another horse seems illogical to me, college is stupid expensive. Tuition, housing, food, books, not cheap at all! Senior year is a time to be with friends, get in a lot of experiences, and work hard to finish high school. I can't imagine having time to gentle a horse and ride 3 others as well as spend time with friends and finish up schooling in that last year. Senior year literally flies, you will not have a spare moment, you start finding your independence and learn more about yourself more and more.
Enjoy your time in school, do not take it for granted! Real world adult stuff is no joke lol
