Question about pasture breeding
-
Ok, this might be something that is explained in the FAQ Users Guide and I just missed it.
I have a 100 mare pasture with 100 mares in it. I put in two stallions. My understanding is that each stallion can breed 50 mares a season, so it should have lined up perfectly.
But for some reason when it autobred my pastures, one stallion only bred 42 mares, leaving 8 mares unbred?
Should I have put in all three possible stallions to ensure all mares were covered? I mean, it's only 4k to manually rebreed the pasture so I'm not bothered at all... just curious why those 8 mares didn't get bred. I double checked and the youngest mares are all 5 years so there couldn't have been an issue where some were too young or something, so I'm not sure? -
It is just the way the pastures work ; the 100 acre pasture is set up to have 3 stallions ; so if you only have 2 ; you ll need to go back and Clean up the breedings :)

The autobreed automatically stops as soon as any stallion hits 50 breedings, so when there are only two, unless they both happen to hit 50 breedings at the same time, one will be left with some available breedings and a few mares will be left out too. That always bothers me a little as well, because I like to have the stallion and mare breedings match up perfectly, but there are always a few foals left out of the best in pasture email that way. Just note, however, that the first breeding wasn't free just because it was autobred. You get charged for that too, at least I'm pretty sure, so getting charged for manually rebreeding the pasture to get those last few mares makes no difference.

It does not stop as soon as any stallion hits 50. It assigns mares to the stallions randomly. A stallion can be assigned more than 50 mares because it is random. If he can't cover that mare because his slots are full then he won't even try to cover that mare. (The spirit is willing but the flesh is too spongy and bruised!) If you just hit the breed again button the other stallion will cover the mares the first stud missed and the numbers will work out a perfect 50/50.
The price you are charged is per foal born. You only get charged when each foal full is born, not per times you click the pasture. Your initial breeding was 4k cheaper than estimated because those mares were not covered.Post edited by Ammit at 2022-05-18 13:41:13Need to contact me? Read this first.

The visual of the poor overworked stallions is killing me =))Starstruck2 on Bluegrass and Forest

I never actually looked at my cash in/out, I just assumed the autobreeding cost whatever it says it would and aside from making sure I have enough funds to pay it I never give it another thought. So I figured the $4k for the missed mares would be on top of the previous estimate. Since I had well over 4k, I didn't worry about it . I mean, other than getting some more 1,000 horse barns so I can condense my show ponies into fewer but bigger barns I'm not so concerned with my cash balance at any given time.
Although now I'm picturing my poor overworked studs lol
