Tips for stall rest?
  • So long story short one of my mares has a hairline crack in her knee. Me and the vet believe she was probably kicked. Luckily it’s not broken and just cracked so the vet said stall rest for at least a month and then recheck it

I’ve never had a horse be on stall rest before so does anyone have any tips or tricks to keep her from losing her mind?

    Thanks!
  • Slow feed nets, lots of mental stimulation, puzzles, treat balls, teach her tricks like kiss, grooming extras like deep condition or paint hooves, learn some body work techniques or massage techniques, practice braiding or banding, work on ground work if she can have 5 min walks.

  • My 21 year old OTTB fell on ice in January and fractured his pelvis...

He's at the age that he's not into toys, he just wanted to be with the herd so we created a small pasture outside of his window and alternated his mares in it and towards the end of his stall rest he ended up in a super small round pen that he couldnt act up in but could still interact with his mares in the field.. otherwise slow feed hay nets worked amazingly and he did end up needing to be on a mild sedative (Trazadone).. he was stall bound until April from January...
  • This mare is 22 and not into toys much but I’m going to get a couple food involved ones as she’s insanely food motivated and see what happens,

we don’t have a barn so I collapsed my round pen into a stall sized space for her. She’s outside and her buddies have been hanging around her a lot. She currently has an entire round bale (it was there before and was the best I could do for her on such short notice) I’ll pull her off that and switch to slow feeders. Hopefully it’ll help Boredom and keep her from getting super fat

@KhaosAcres did your boy make a full recovery?
  • He will never be sound for riding but he did make a full recovery! He has been a pasture pony for the last few years anyways so no riding isn't an issue
