What makes Kit Promoter have white splotches?
  • image
    GE GoCPr

I bought this mare to for my giftee, because they want the splotchy KP horses. I can GMT it, but I don't actually know what makes KP show up like that (because I don't care for the gene). Add another KP? Take away a cream?
  • KP stands for KIT-Promotor. It's a recessive gene, so it only shows the splotchy white cloud patches when its homozygous and in combination with 2 KIT genes.

Your mare has no KIT genes.
    Possible KIT genes are:
    W1 (white 1)
    W2 (white 2)
    W3 (white 3)
    W8 (white 8)
    W10 (white 10)
    w20 (white 20)
    R (roan)
    TO (tobiano)
    Sb1 (sabino 1)
    Sb2 (sabino 2)
    M (white M)
(You can see this in the search at the tab 'white markings' under Kit locus).

To get her white and splotchy you need to GMT 2 kit genes onto her (for example w20 and tobiano, or hom tobiano) as well as give her a second copy of KP so she is homozygous for it.

There is also a KP2, that does not give the white patches but gives white markings like tobiano splotchy edges. If you combine KP with KP2 you get a super cool effect and massive supersplotches. KP2 is much more expensive though, but also has an effect when heterozygous.

Ill try to find some examples in a few minutes for ya.

This horse has the splotchy white cloud because it is homozygous for KP (KP/KP)and has 2 KIT genes (Roan and Sabino; R/SB1)

This horse is homozygous for KP (KP/KP) but only has 1 KIT genes, white M (M/-). Therefore she does not has the splotches:

This horse is homozygous for KP (KP/KP) and has 2 KIT genes: white M and white 20 (M/w20), so she has the white cloud splotches on her belly:

Here is a horse with only KP2 (KP2/-), you can see the edges of the marking aren't as sharp as the horses above, they are more splotchy:

KP2 has an effect when heterozygous on any KIT gene with white (so not on roan). Even a horse that has only 1 KIT gene, will get its look modified by KP2 with splotchy edges, just like this one below (only has sabino 1 so SAB1/-).

When you combine KP2 with KP you get a great effect (KP2/KP). Its almost as if the KP2 makes the splotchy white patches that occur when homozygous KP even more splotchier!:

However, for this effect to happen the horse must also have 2 KIT genes.

If a horse has only 1 KIT gene the big white patches will not appear, even if it is KP2/KP:
    image
    MS hCHOC KP2 13782913

As you can see the white markings are made splotchy by the KP2, but no big white supersplotch patches appear as she has only sabino and no other KIT gene.

    So to recap:
    1. To get big splotchy KP cloud patches you need a horse that has 2 KIT genes AND is homozygous for KP. (Just like snowflake only shows when a horse is homozygous for it AND has at least 1 appy gene).

    2. Want to go big and loud on the KP cloud patches? Combine KP2 with KP on a horse with 2 KIT genes.

    3. Don't like the cloudy white splotches but more of a subtle splotch-addict? Then just add KP2 with any KIT gene that is not roan.

Oh and dont doubt too much about KP2 for your giftee, if they would have liked that they would have said so. So if you just do what I've put in bold you'll make your giftee super happy!
I just wanted to show all that is out there :p

I hope this helped explain KP and KP2 a bit. If I was unclear please let me know!

  • Thanks! That was an excellent explanation. As I mentioned, I haven't ever paid the genetics any attention because I don't prefer it, so I was a bit lost when I saw my giftee asked for it.
  • Yay I'm glad I could help out! :) Thanks everyone :X

@lecobb8 could you send me a PM with the wishes of your giftee? I have many KP straws, eggs and maybe even horses laying around that I'd be happy to sent over to you.

  • Thanks, I will. Because I just realized it will take almost all of my 1.7 mil to put 2 copies of KP on a red foundie instead of the few yellows I bought. Eeek!

I just bred this girl. What is the simplest thing to take away to get rid of all the "fog"? I love M, so I don't want that to go. The w20? KP?
  • You can try rerolling her before using GMTs. It will change the expression of the KP and leave the KitM.

  • Yep I'd try rerolling her a few times! (Its under the control panel and then the 3rd option). KP clouds are actually completely unique, so each time you reroll they are made from scratch again.

If rerolling doesn't work I would either remove the KP2 or the KP. That way she is heterozygous instead of homo KP, so she won't have the KP cloud anymore.
If you like splotchy kit M markings like the last horse of my previous post (MS hCHOC KP2) (or the 4th horse) then remove the KP.
If you don't like those splotchy edges then remove the KP2, you will then have a horse with the normal/regular KIT M markings (like the 2nd and 3rd horse I posted).
