Best way to GMT a new herd sire?
  • This seems like a silly question, but I'm still pretty new to having enough funds to GMT horses.

From my observation, it seems like the rare genes available change from day to day (aside from yesterday, which I couldn't afford to participate in). So if I want to put multiple fancy genes on a horse, would it be smartest to pick my starting stallion maybe as a yearling, and work on adding genes to him before he's even old enough to breed? That way I'm not going to accidentally breed him before he's done?

Does collecting straws/eggs and using them count against his "GMT-ability"?
  • I always try to start with a yearling.
(but sometimes a slightly older one will pop up I don't have to do as much work to)

As for the straws/eggs, I think as long as there isn't an actual foal,
you can still GMT while holding said straws/eggs. Not 100% on that though..

  • I start with yearlings as well to give me time to build what I want.

You can store straws/eggs and not use them but still be able to GMT.

  • Don't forget that you can't pull straws/eggs until the horse is old enough to breed. 3 years for a stallion and 4 years for a mare.

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure.

  • Thanks for the info! I was looking through my current stallions to see if I could add anything last minute to them, but of course they've all been bred, so I need to start from scratch.
  • Also if you are going to change the gender do that before pulling straws or eggs.

  • I always start with yearlings when I need new herd sires and go from there. There are specific DHHs I prefer to use as a starting base to work with.
  • Also , you can add genes to your cart and leave them in there for a few days before you pay for them if you need to :)
